Public talk - online | Galaxy Zoo Blog. Tonight I went to a talk at SIUE by the astrophysicist Chris Lintott. This was an amazing talk about the latest in using the public to help in massive scientific data classification and his current project the Galaxy Zoo. Everyone should take some time to check out the Galaxy Zoo and to help with projects like this. The human mind is still one of the greatest and underutilized computers we have.

SIUE: A league of their own | St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Well it looks like SIUE will be joining the Ohio Valley Conference in their move to Division 1. This seems like a good conference and a good fit for the university. I was a little afraid that we would be out played in the conference we joined.

.Mac Web Gallery - Bill at SIUE. I went to listen to the Ex-President Bill today. It was a mildly entertaining speech. A lot of rah rah Hillary is great. I do agree with a lot of her policy proposals. I also agree with a lot of Barack Obama's ideas. It will be an interesting tuesday. We will have to wait and see who gets the most votes.

Mishap cuts phone service in Edwardsville | STLtoday. You may have noticed that my blog was unavailable. That is because we had no Internet or phones at the university for more that 24 hours. Service was just restored. It was an exiting two days with no services. Another story here.

Well it has been three years now on this blog. I have come a long way. I know I do not get into much personal stuff on here but I would like to add more. I am going to work on that. I have a new position at SIUE and it is keeping me very busy. I am now working with the networking group. We take care of all the wires and wireless that runs all over this campus. I have been having a lot of fun and really enjoy the new challenges. Hope to keep you all updated as this all progresses.

CALPIRG: "Rip-off 101: How The Current Practices Of The Textbook Industry Drive Up The Cost Of Collge Textbooks". Very, VERY, interesting article/study on the cost of textbooks. I agree that textbooks are too expensive and rarely used to their most effective purpose. I am getting ready to enter graduate school and I will have to purchase my textbooks. One nice thing about SIUE is that as an undergrad you get rental books and the cost is in your tuition.

My week has been extremely busy. We had to help the residents at SIUE. It was fun but very exhausting. We were throw into a meeting at 9:00 am Monday morning and then had to start the help at NOON. We had to visit every desktop in the residence halls. I was paired with my friend Phil in Bluff Hall. We did have some fun but it was a long week with some long hours at work.

Another day trying to stay on top of the Blaster worm. SIUE has a webpage that has patches and instructions. Hopefully no one needs it by now, but if you do there it is. One good thing, my iPod helped a lot today. I used it to keep my sanity and to pass the time watching machines scan themselves. I just need to get some more music encoded and loaded onto the drive.

Well it is official. Today I went back to work for Academic Computing here at SIUE. I had hinted at this before in my blog, but did not want to say anything till it was a done deal. I am now posting this message from the comfort of my new office. I now have a window! How cool is that? I will be working with the same people I used to work with before I went to OIT.

They are at it again. The IL legislation last year passed a law Public Act 92-0728 that is an extension to the DMCA. This is not good people. Soon we will be breaking laws by watching DVDs at home. This has to be stopped. I sent the following letter to my representatives. Look yours up here if you live in IL. Otherwise look around in your own state to make sure this does not happen to you.
I am very concerned that our individual rights are being eroded. I am very concerned about extensions to the DMCA like the Public Act 92-0728 that was passed last year. I am concerned that we are taking this way too far and taking away the fair use rights that we as consumers have. I want you to know that I am opposed to this type of legislation and would like to see some of our consumer rights restored so that individuals will not be prosecuted for what in the past has been termed fair use. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Kade P. Cole

Today the school was visited by some folks from RedHat. It was a fun and exciting time for all. Here are some pictures for you. Sara came and attended the event with me. WE both had fun and got a free key chain. I asked some questions and got some answers. They were nice to stop by the school on the request of the Computer Association Of SIUE, or CAOS.
