Let's hope MLS doesn't give St. Louis a raw deal | STLtoday. A new story on the MLS and St. Louis. Looks like we will not be getting the latest MLS franchise. I am a disappointed but not surprised. It seems that the good guy always gets screwed in these situations. I assume that there was not enough money in back room deals for them to bring the team here. I know that this would be a great market.

I called and canceled Direct Kick today. I was very unhappy last year with the blackouts that occurred when I was trying to watch games. It seems that this year will be just as bad since MLS has agreed with Fox Soccer and HDNet to play games. I also found myself not watching as many games last year. I will settle for watching them on ESPN.

MLS Announce 2008 Schedule | soccer365.com. I am looking forward to a new season of MLS. We will see if Beckham can make it onto the pitch this year. I will probably not be watching as many games live this year as I will be dropping my Direct Kick. Last year there were too many blackouts and I was not happy so I will vote with my dollars this year.

The TV Final | NYTimes. There is a story on the NY Times World Cup Blog that states, "The U.S. TV viewing audience for the World Cup final was equal to that of the NCAA basketball final and the World Series and higher than for the NBA finals." It goes on to say, "the audience for the whole match was roughly the same size here in the US as it was in Britain." You can us that now to fight people who say we do not watch soccer here.

Match 63: The Germans were able to pull off the third place victory with a 3-1 defeat of Portugal. With help from two goals from Schweinsteiger, Germany was able to control the game and fend off the attack of Portugal. This was a great game and a fitting end for the host nation. They will not be going home empty handed.

Match 62: France was able to pull off the defeat of Portugal 1-0. France will now move on to the final to face Italy for the World Cup 2006. France still looked good and was able to control most of the game. France was able to capitalize on a PK in the 33rd minute. Zidane was able to finish and France hung on to the one point lead to advance. This sets up a great final with Italy having won 3 times and France once.

Match 61: With 2 goals in the second overtime, Italy defeats Germany 2-0. Italy will now advance to the final game on Sunday. I have to give credit to Italy they played well to pull off the win. It looked like Germany was content to send this to PKs. I am disappointed as I expected Germany to take home the Cup this year.

Saturday, July 01, 2006

Match 60: Wow what a game. If anyone was to send Brazil home early it was going to be the French. Well they did it. France defeated Brazil 1-0 on a nice ball from Zidane to Henry. This was a great game that France controlled and kept Brazil from playing in. Well this cup has been full of surprises. Now France takes on Portugal in the semi-final.

Labels: ,

Match 59: This was another nail-biter. England held Portugal 0-0 till the end of regulation and through overtime despite being a man down. Then it went into PKs and the Portugal keeper was able to save two and send Portugal on to the next match. Portugal defeats England 3-1 on PKs.

Labels: ,

Match 58: This was a magnificent showing by the Italians. They defeat Ukraine 3-0. Toni was able to put the game away with two goal. Ukraine was just outplayed in this match. I look forward to the next match with Germany v Italy.

Labels: ,

Match 57: In a brilliant match Germany defeats Argentina to move ahead to the Semi-Finals. Argentina struck first and then Germany tied the match in the second half 1-1. It stayed this score all through regular time and over time. This lead to the penalty kick shootout. Lehmann came up big for the Germans and saved two PKs. This was the decider as Germany was able to beat Ukraine 4-2 in PKs.

Match 56: Well France seems to have hit their stride now. They defeated Spain 3-1 in a nice match. Zidane was able to find the net. I think they will have a great match against Brazil. The winner of that match has a great chance at the trophy.

Labels: ,

Tuesday, June 27, 2006

Match 55: Well in pure Brazil fashion they cruise by Ghana 3-0. Brazil looked remarkably flat in this game. They were still able to put three in and win. Ronaldo was able to find the net and make it into the record books. He is now the all time leading scorer at the World Cup with 15 goals. He still has more to play so he could add to the total.

Monday, June 26, 2006

Match 54: Wow! What a match! This was the most emotional and dramatic match yet. Switzerland was able to hold off the Ukraine through 90 minutes. Then both sides entered the 30 minutes of overtime. They fought but no one could score. This led the game into penalty kicks. This started out amazing with two saves. Then the Ukraine was able to sink the next three in a row and Switzerland only could make one. The Ukraine wins by PKs 3-0.

Labels: ,

Match 53: In a great match that was well fought on both sides, Italy eliminated Australia from the tournament 1-0. The Socceroos looked like they were going to pull out the victory but a controversial PK called in stoppage time put Italy ahead. I was rooting for Australia to pull out the upset. Italy will take on the Ukraine in the next game.

Labels: ,

Sunday, June 25, 2006

Match 52: In another amazing match, Portugal was able to fend off the Netherlands attacks and win 1-0. This one ended up 9v9. Another emotional and physical game. The ref sent off 2 players on each side. This was quite a game. Portugal will face England next match.

Labels: ,

Match 51: England was able to defeat Ecuador 1-0 on a beautiful strike from Beckham. England still looks shaky and will have one hell of a game against Portugal.

Labels: ,

Saturday, June 24, 2006

Match 50: In a great game that was hard fought on both sides, Argentina defeats Mexico 2-1. This game was tied 1-1 through 90 minutes. They then went into two 15 minute overtime periods. Argentina was able to capitalize on a magnificent strike by Maxi Rodriguez in the first overtime period. This was a must not miss game which I hope you all got to watch.

Labels: ,

Match 49: Germany looked in good form as they defeat Sweden 2-0. With two early goals Germany flew ahead and controlled the game. Sweden's chances were not helped when they had a man sent off in the 35th minute. Sweden's best chance was a PK awarded in the 53rd minute. Alas the PK was missed by overshooting the goal. Germany advances to the quarter-finals.

Match 48: In a great match France finally found the net. Wow they can play and score. Amazing! Well congratulations France and welcome to the next round. You will have a tough game against Spain. I hope you can keep up the fight.

Labels: ,

Match 47: Korea fought hard but were out played by Switzerland 2-0. This game had lots of action and interesting calls. The refs must be getting tired. This was another good showing by the Koreans but they could not clinch a birth in the second round. Switzerland will face the Ukraine and the Koreans head home.

Labels: ,

Match 46: Spain continued its cruise through the group play with a 1-0 defeat of Saudi Arabia. This leaves Spain undefeated in the World Cup and the will advance as the leader of their group.

Labels: ,

Match 45: Ukraine defeats Tunisia 1-0 and sends them home to play another day. The Ukraine team will face the winner of group G which will be decided later today. Tunisia's only hope was to defeat the Ukraine. That was made extremely difficult when Tunisia had a man sent off and had to play most of the game 10 v 11.

Thursday, June 22, 2006

Match 44: Wow! This was the best game of the day. Possibly the best game of the tournament so far. Croatia and Australia battled to see who would finish second in the group. Croatia struck first then Australia evened the score. Then Croatia again scored and Australia tied the match in the 79th minute 2-2. This is how the match would finish much to the delight of Australia. They will advance and Croatia is headed home. This match ended in a most bizarre set of circumstances. Australia put a ball in from the corner and knocked it into the net, but the ref had already whistled the play dead. Then the ref sent off a Croatian player and called the match over. There was chaos on the field. Very strange, but in the end all I have to say is, "Go Socceroos!"

Labels: ,

Match 43: Japan scored first and looked good in the first half. Shortly before the first half ended Brazil was able to even the score. Then the rest of the match went to Brazil. Ronaldo scored two goals to bring his total all time World Cup goal count to 14. This helped lead Brazil to a 4-1 win over Japan. Brazil will take on Ghana in the next round and Japan will head home.

Labels: ,

Match 42: This was my match of the day. Well I was disappointed again. It looks like the USA is back to normal form. We just can not produce when it comes to the big games. I have to give Ghana lots of credit. They played well and took this game 2-1. They will advance to the next round and the USA will be headed home.

Labels: ,

Match 41: Well Italy did its part and defeated the Czech Republic 2-0. Italy clinches the group and moves on to the next round. This was the result that the USA needed.

Wednesday, June 21, 2006

Match 40: In the let down of the day, the Netherlands tied Argentina 0-0. This was a good match but no one could slot one in. This draw will give Argentina the group as both teams advance to the next round. Argentina will take on Mexico and Portugal will face the Netherlands. We now know 8 of the 16 teams that will be in the knockout round.

Labels: ,

Match 39: In what I thought was the best game of the day, the Ivory Coast beat Serbia and Montenegro 3-2. With two PKs and one earned goal, Ivory Coast edged past Serbia and Montenegro. Alas this was all too little too late as both teams had no chance to advance to the next round.

Labels: ,

Match 38: Portugal defeats Mexico 2-1 and claims first in their group. Portugal ran out quick and was up 2-0 over Mexico. Then Mexico was able to get a point back on a nice cross that was headed past the keeper. Mexico was unable to capitalize on any more chances. They even missed a PK in the 57th minute. Both teams will move on to the next round.

Labels: ,

Match 37: Iran scored in the second half to draw with Angola 1-1. This was the worst outcome for Angola as they needed a win to even consider advancing. Now both teams are headed home.

This result places England first in the group and Sweden second. Both teams will advance to the next stage. England will take on Ecuador and Sweden will face Germany.

Match 29: In a stunning game France proves it still can not win games at the World Cup. Korea scored late in the second half to tie the game at 1-1. With this draw France is in a precarious position of not advancing to the next round. They must win their next game to even consider advancing.

Labels: ,

Match 28: Brazil still looks good and is cruising through the group play. With this win over Australia 2-0, Brazil have clinched their spot in the next round.

Labels: ,

Match 27: Due to hiccup with my TiVo I did not get to see this game. It does not look like I missed much. It was a pretty even match the only excitement was a blocked PK in the 22nd minute. Japan ties Croatia 0-0. This is the first point for each team.

Saturday, June 17, 2006

Match 26: In the worst appearance by a referee in this tournament the USA manage a 1-1 draw with Italy. After Italy lost one man to a red card, the USA lost two men to red cards. The USA played most of the second half 9 v 10 against Italy. This was a horrible showing by the referee in this game. The USA managed to still play well and this was a much better showing then their loss to the Czechs. The USA will play Ghana next and needs a win to advance.

Labels: ,

Match 25: In an amazing game Ghana pulls of the upset of the tournament defeating the Czech Republic 2-0. This is Ghana's first appearance in the world cup and their first victory in the world cup. They looked really good and shut down and frustrated the Czech team. The USA plays Ghana next and it will be quite a game. I will definitely be home on Thursday to tune in.

Labels: ,

Match 24: Portugal with a 2-0 win over Iran guarantees its advancement to the next round. Iran played a good game but could not find the back of the net. Portugal sealed their victory with a PK in the 80th minute.

Labels: ,

Friday, June 16, 2006

Match 23: With a well fought game Angola pulls out the draw 0-0 with Mexico to stay in the tournament. Angola now needs a win and Mexico to lose to put it in a tie with Mexico for points. Then if they outscore Mexico they could advance. This result hurts Mexico more than it helps Angola as now Mexico needs a draw or a win next to guarantee advancement.

Labels: ,

Match 22: With the Netherlands defeat of the Ivory Coast 2-1, the Netherlands and Argentina have clinched their spots in the next round. They will play each other next to see who will lead their group. The Ivory Coast fought well and played great so far in this tournament but they, along with Serbia and Montenegro, will need to pack their bags and head home after one last game against each other.

Labels: ,

Match 21: Argentina came out and with a convincing 6-0 win over Serbia and Montenegro clinched their ticket to the next round. Serbia could never get it together and with Argentina slotting 3 past the keeper in the first half were already out of the match. Serbia and Montenegro will be headed home as Argentina sail through to the next round. Some great goals in this match if you have not seen it yet, give it a watch.

Labels: ,

Match 19: Trinidad played a great game but lost 2-0 to England to late goals. England still looked like it was struggling a little to find itself. They had nice opportunities and should have soundly defeated them. You have to give great credit to Trinidad and Tobago for a great showing here in their first World Cup. I watched this game late last night and could not post this till this morning.

Thursday, June 15, 2006

Match 20: With a strike late in the game Sweden defeated Paraguay 1-0. This has eliminated Paraguay from the tournament. Sweden will have to await the results of their next game to see if they can advance out of this group. They are very likely to advance but not guaranteed.

Labels: ,

Match 18: Ecuador has done it now. With this defeat of Costa Rica 3-0, Ecuador and Germany are guaranteed advancement to the next round. Poland and Costa Rica have been eliminated from the tournament. Ecuador looked very strong and scored some great goals. Ecuador will play Germany next Tuesday and the winner will claim first in their group.

Labels: ,

Wednesday, June 14, 2006

Match 17: Germany looked a little shaken by the Polish attack. It would take them 92 minutes to score, but the Germans pull out the 1-0 victory. I have to give a lot of credit to Poland. It looked like they were going to pull off the draw. It was only very late in the game that Germany was able to knock one in. This all but eliminates the Poles as it will be virtually impossible for them to advance out of this group now.

Labels: ,

Match 16: In an extremely entertaining match to watch, Saudi Arabia came out and tied Tunisia 2-2. The first half was back and forth but Tunisia scored first and led 1-0 going into the half. Then the second half belonged to Saudi Arabia. They came out attacking and would not let up. They tied it 1-1 in the 57th minute. Then the game looked like it would end that way. Saudi Arabia finally made a sub bringing in Al Jaber and he struck quickly buy slotting one past the keeper into the net. Just when you thought this was over Tunisia gets the equalizer in the 92nd minute. Wow what a game.

Labels: ,

Match 15: Spain brought it and spanked Ukraine 4-0. While the PK awarded Spain was arguable at best, they still scored 3 other goals and Ukraine was never in the game. The Spaniards controlled the whole field and the flow of the game. With quick counters and smooth scoring they are looking really good to lead out group H.

Labels: ,

Tuesday, June 13, 2006

Match 14: Brazil played a good game and defeated Croatia 1-0. You have to give a lot of credit to Croatia for losing by just one point. They played great defense and had plenty of opportunities. They just lacked the finish and poise of the great Brazil. They look unbeatable. Let us look forward to Brazil vs. Germany for the final. And what a game it would be.

Labels: ,

Match 13: The Swiss team looked really good and played an excellent tactical game against an arguably stronger French team. France could not get the play together in the final third of the field. They could not find the strikers with crisp passes when open. You have to give a lot of credit to the Swiss defense. The Swiss played an excellent defense and the French could not penetrate into the box. You have to like the Swiss chances in this group after they draw 0-0 with France.

Labels: ,

Match 12: The Korean Republic rebounds to beat the African nation of Togo 2-1. This was a hard fought offensive game. Both teams looked good. Togo came out and scored first and you thought they might take the game. Then the Koreans struck to equalize. After that the Koreans played a nice game and finally capitalized and scored one more to get the lead. You have to like the Koreans chance of advancing, but you can never count out the African teams. They have been really good in the Cup so far.

Labels: ,

Monday, June 12, 2006

Match 11: Italy looked really good and beat Ghana 2-0. It looks like Italy will be the team to beat. The Ghana team played well but gave up two goals and could not recover. I hope that Italy does not show up saturday when they play the USA.

Labels: ,

Match 10: The Czechs came out early and struck in the 5th minute. It was a disappointing showing from the USA from then on. The USA had a couple good opportunities but looked really flat the entire game and could not capitalize on anything. Rosicky would continue to punish the USA by putting away two more goals. The USA loses 0-3 to the Czech Republic in a miserable game for the USA. I hope we can do better against Italy on saturday.

Labels: ,

Match 9: Those scrappy Japan boys came out and scored first on Australia. This was a good game. It did get a little choppy in the middle. It looked like Japan was comfortable with the 1-0 lead until the last 10 minutes. Then the Japanese team just fell apart. The Australians came out and scored three goals in the last 10 minutes, one was even in stoppage time. The Australians looked really good and fought well to get the win. Just remember never give up.

Labels: ,

Sunday, June 11, 2006

Match 8: Portugal squeaked out a 1-0 result over Angola. Angola looked very good and played well for being behind. Portugal struck very early in the 4th minute as Pauleta snuck one past the keeper. Portugal looks good to win this group.

Labels: ,

Match 7: Iran came out searching for the win. Mexico struck first and scored in the 28th minute. Then Iran tied the game 1-1 in the 36th minute. Iran had some inspired play and produced many opportunities. Mexico looked shaky starting the second half and used all their subs by the 52nd minute when Borgetti left the field apparently injured. Then Mexico was inspired and produced two goals late in the second half to put the game away. Mexico ended up winning the game 3-1. All in all this was an entertaining game.

Labels: ,

Match 6: In what I would call a lack luster game, the Netherlands defeated Serbia and Montenegro 0-1. The only highlight was the inspired play of Robben. He was inspired and had multiple opportunities. The Netherlands showed well and mainly controlled the play of the game and pull out the result.

Match 5: Argentina fought to a 2-1 win over the Ivory Coast. Ivory Coast played a great game but could not finish the ball. Argentina ran out to an early lead scoring two goals in the first half. Drogba scored late in the second half but the Ivory Coast could not put in another to tie the game.

Labels: ,

Match 4: Trinidad and Tobago played with the heart and soul of a nation with nothing to lose. Playing almost the entire second half with 10 men, it had to be one of the best games I have witnessed. The secondary keeper Hislop, that was put in at the last minute before the game started, played amazing and keep the team in the game almost single handedly. Sweden in the last 10 minutes pushed hard but did not produce against the stolid back line of Trinidad and Tobago. You just have to love those underdogs to pull off a point against a group favorite is amazing!

Labels: ,

Match 3: In a game that was played pretty safe, England beat Paraguay 1-0 on a Paraguay own goal. Beckham put a nice free kick into the box and it deflected off a Paraguay defender past the keeper. This was the only goal in the game. There were a couple nice opportunities but I felt that England controlled the match. I felt England could have played better as they were content to sit back and take the 1-0 lead to the 90th minute.

Match 2: After watching the Polish team lose 0-2 to Ecuador, I am finding it hard to believe they will advance. If I had to sum up the game in one word I would say unlucky. The Poles hit the Goal Post twice on what should have been two nice goals. I have to give Ecuador all the credit. They played a great game and sat back and waited for their opportunities. I now predict that Ecuador will advance to the next round.

Match 1: I just fished watching the Germany vs. Costa Rica match. Germany defeated Costa Rica 4-2 in a well fought match. There were spurts of energy from Costa Rica. I thought they might be able to pull out a draw, but the German side was just too strong. They were never behind in the game and Klose scored two to put the game away. There was a lot of nerves in this opening match but still I like Germany to go all the way.

U.S. Men's National Team Falls to Germany, 4-1 | ussoccer.com. Yesterday the US MNT played one heck of a game against a desperate Germany. I think that the US played 70 minutes of GREAT soccer. We fell apart after that and let Germany score a couple good goals. I do have to say that with this being a "B" team that we gave them one heck of a game. This is great practice for those players who have never been in a World Cup. I can not wait till the World Cup starts this year.

Never Mind The Curry Wurst - World Cup Germany Could Have Chips In Balls | About.com. Interesting story about some testing of chipped soccer balls. This could be a good help with some referees as it is very difficult sometimes to determine if the ball has actually crossed the line. I am still unsettled with the use of these but I do encourage some testing and experimenting to see if they would work.

Arena wants fans to tune in | FOXSports.com. Arena comes out with some big quips for US soccer fans. I agree with most of what he says but I am one that watches every game and watches MLS. I would attend some MLS games if I had a club closer. I DO attend the US National Team games. So everyone watch the game on Sat.

Soccer Sunday: Alone in the world | New York Daily News. Well I am noticing. I do agree thought that the mainstream media will usually ignore all things soccer. I never see highlights even on SportsCenter.

Today I went and renewed my US Passport at the Passport Fair. I had previously received a passport when I traveled to Holland with my soccer team when I was 16. I had since not renewed it. I had been wanting to renew it for a long time. It is good for 10 years and is a good idea to have one on hand. You never know when you might want to take a trip. I have no trips planned but I will be going to Europe sometime in the future. Point Radio
