Eduroam
We are excited to announce that SIUE has joined eduroam, the Global WiFi for Academia program! In the coming weeks, eduroam will be replacing SIUE-WPA as the primary WiFi network on the Edwardsville, Alton, and East St. Louis campuses.
What is eduroam?
eduroam (education roaming) is the secure, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community. eduroam allows students, researchers and staff from participating institutions to obtain Internet connectivity across campus and when visiting other participating institutions by simply opening their laptop.
What does this mean for SIUE?
SIUE students, faculty, and staff will be able to use eduroam when traveling to other member campuses around the world. Locally this includes SIUC, all University of Illinois campuses, Washington University, and the University of Missouri. A complete list of US institutions is maintained on the eduroam web site: https://www.eduroam.us/institutions_list
Visitors to SIUE from eduroam member campuses will be able to automatically connect and use WiFi when visiting SIUE campuses.
When will eduroam be available?
The eduroam WiFi network is available today on all three SIUE campuses including residence halls and Cougar Village.
Who do I ask for help?
SIUE wireless networks are maintained and supported by Information Technology Services (ITS). The ITS Help Desk can be reached by telephone at 618-650-5500, email at help@siue.edu, or in person in the basement of Lovejoy Library.
eduroam is not a company that provides Wi-Fi for the campus, but an authentication system to allow WiFi access on member campuses around the world.
What happens to SIUE-WPA and SIUE-WIFI?
SIUE-WPA and SIUE-WIFI will be decommissioned January 1, 2016. Make sure to configure your device to use eduroam before that time.
The "Welcome to SIUE" WiFi network is available to help SIUE users configure eduroam, and to self-register other SIUE guests.
How do I configure my device to use eduroam?
Visit https://www.siue.edu/its/wireless and click on "Configure my device to use eduroam" and follow the steps presented. When configured using this tool a certificate will be installed on your device that will be valid for 4 years or when your SIUE account becomes disabled, whichever comes first. If you replace or reload your device this tool can be run again at any time.
On SIUE campuses you can connect to "Welcome to SIUE" and follow the directions posted to configure eduroam.
Will I need to update my phone and computer WiFi settings each time my eID password changes or expires?
No! The installed certificate is used to authenticate you to eduroam, not your eID and password.
Why am I required to set up a passcode on my Android device to use eduroam?
The Android operating system requires a device passcode in order to install the required certificates. This requirement is not enforced by SIUE. You can use Google Feedback to provide your opinion about this to Google: http://www.google.com/tools/feedback/intl/en/
