INTRODUCING CASCADE SERVER - SIUE's NEW WEB CONTENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

What is Cascade Server?

Hannon Hill's Cascade Server is SIUE's content management system for web pages.

Cascade is completely web based. All Cascade site changes/updates will be done through your web browser.

For more information and numerous tutorials, tips and tricks, visit Hannon Hill's extensive Cascade Server Knowledge Base website: http://www.hannonhill.com/kb/index.html

If you want to move your department's website into the Cascade CMS, click on the "Getting Started" link in the upper left column. No HTML knowledge is required to update your Cascade pages. However, a two-hour training session is required before you can begin updating your Cascade pages. Click on the "Sign-up for Cascade Training" link in the upper left column to sign up for your training session.

Cascade Tips and Tricks

  • IMPORTANT: After logging into Cascade, always make sure you click the dropdown menu next to Global (located at the top of the page and to the right of the Cascade Server logo), and select Southern Illinois University - Edwardsville.
  • IMPORTANT: Blocks (left and right navigation columns located in the components folder of a site) are NOT publishable. After editing one of these blocks, you must publish each page associated with that block. The simplest way to do this is to use the Multi-Select feature: click on the folder that contains the pages associated with the block (i.e. /its/web/), put a checkmark next to each page that needs publishing, select the Publish option in the dropdown menu (located BELOW the file list), and then click Submit.
  • IMPORTANT: When creating new PAGES: for the System Name field, use all lowercase letters and do NOT use spaces (instead of a space, use an underscore or dash).
  • IMPORTANT: When importing FILES (images, pdf's, etc) into Cascade, leave the System Name field blank. The actual name of your file will automatically be used for the System Name. May cause errors with your uploaded file if not left blank.
  • IMPORTANT: Always use the Heading 2 Format option for the first header on your page. NEVER use the Heading 1 Format for any headers on your page since the Heading 1 Format is already used for the Section Header.
  • IMPORTANT: If you are pasting text into the WYSIWYG editor, always use the "Paste as Plain Text" button found within the WYSIWYG editor.
  • To cut/copy/paste in the WYSIWYG editor, you must use keyboards shortcuts: Cut (Windows: Ctrl-X Mac: Cmd-X), Copy (Windows: Ctrl-C Mac: Cmd-C), Paste (Windows: Ctrl-V Mac: Cmd-V)
  • For more bullet options for an ordered or unordered list, highlight the desired text, click the "Ordered List" or "Unordered List" button, then click the "Styles" dropdown menu and select a bullet style from the list of options
  • To add a line break: press 'SHIFT' + 'ENTER' on your keyboard
  • If you are having problems with pages loading properly within Cascade, log out of Cascade and log back in. If that doesn't work properly, you may need to restart your browser or clear your browser cache.
  • DO NOT delete old versions of documents.
  • If you are having trouble changing font styles, clean the style with the 'Remove formatting' button.

CONVERT WORD DOCS TO CLEAN HTML

word to htmlDo you want to paste the contents of a Word document in one of your Cascade pages?
Are you frustrated that you have to paste as plain text and then reformat everything (bullets, bold text, links, etc) in Cascade?

Give this a try:
Convert Word Documents to Clean HTML

Just paste the contents of your Word document into the this converter and it will spit out clean HTML to then copy and paste in the HTML source editor of your Cascade page.

It may work perfect for you, or it may need a few tweaks after it is in Cascade, but either way it should save you a lot of work with reformatting.

Another option is, of course, to convert your Word document to a .pdf file, import the .pdf file and then simply link to it.

Your call on which option you want to use.

CHECK YOUR MICROSOFT OFFICE 2010 FILES FOR ACCESSIBILITY

Microsoft Office 2010 includes a new tool for Word, Excel and PowerPoint called the Accessibility Checker, which you can use to check your document for any issues that might make it challenging for a user with a disability. To learn more, see Accessibility Checker.

URL SHORTENER

If you are wanting to link to something that has a very long URL (in the hundreds of characters) this may cause an issue with Cascade. The Cascade linking action tends to break when extremely long URL's are used as links. To get around this Cascade limitation, we recommend the use of a URL shortener.

google url shortener

You can use Google's URL Shortener here: http://goo.gl

Just paste your long URL in the field and click the "Shorten" button. It will generate a short URL for you to use instead of the long one. The URL is displayed to the right of the "Shorten" button. Just copy this and use it as the URL in Cascade.

You can login when you create short URL's and it will save them in your account for you to reference later.
