Teaching Assistantship (1779-2024)

Qualifications

Minimum Eligibility Criteria
1. Undergraduate grade point average of 2.5.
2. Students must be admitted to the English M.A. program.
3. To hold an assistantship teaching ENG 101/102, TAs must attend and pass required training prior to and during the Fall semester by registering for ENG 554 during their incoming semester, and all TAs must attend the mandatory GA Orientation for the Graduate School of SIUE.

Position Description

Job duties include teaching ENG 101/102 in the classroom and, for one semester, tutoring in the Writing Center.
Job duties for BSE TAs will include leading discussion/reading groups and providing guidance on research projects for FAME/GAME/BSE classes/students and assisting with curriculum and research projects related to African American literary studies.

If you are a NEW Teaching Assistant applicant, please submit the following materials. (The Department will use the letters we received when you applied to the M.A. program unless you would like to submit other letters.):
1. The Department of English Graduate Assistantship Application (which can be found at the website listed below).
2. For ENG 101/102 Teaching Assistants: TEACHING STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:
The Teaching Statement must be 750-1,000 words in length. Applicants should explain their interests in and preparedness to teach English Composition at SIUE. Applicants should discuss their own emerging teaching philosophies, ideas about what makes for effective teaching of writing, what pedagogical strategies might be employed, the role and function of writing assessment in the classroom. Applicants might also address incorporation of pedagogical methods drawn from classroom experience as a student or from related teaching experiences.

ALL Teaching Assistants: WRITING SAMPLE: The writing sample must be between 5 and 10 pages, and must be scholarly argumentative/expository prose.
3. Three letters of recommendation attesting to the applicant’s sound preparation for graduate study, potential for successful graduate study, and potential for success in a teaching position.
4. Evidence of competency in English language skills, both written and oral (materials submitted by the applicant and/or their references can be used to establish this competency).
