Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
● Completion of a bachelor’s degree.
● Admission to the SIUE Graduate School and enrollment in a graduate course of study.
● Available to work all scheduled Summer Orientation program and training dates.

Preferred Qualifications:
● Previous experience with new student orientation, first year experience, first year seminar, student transition, retention, family engagement, or related higher education/student affairs programs.
● Previous experience with coordinating and executing student programs.
● Interest in learning about and applying social justice to practice.
● Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills.
● Excellent event planning, public speaking, and customer service skills.
● Strong organizational skills and an ability to manage multiple projects at once.
● Ability to work independently and take initiative on projects without direct supervision.  

Position Description

New Student Orientation: New Student Transitions Graduate Assistant

Job Description:
The Graduate Assistant for New Student and Family Programs will gain experience in program development for undergraduate first-year students and transfer students and their families and supporters. The Graduate Assistant will also learn how to work in a professional environment that will continue to enhance his/her experience prior to graduation.

Duties:
● Assist in designing, coordinating, and supporting the first-year and transfer orientation programs and provide support for new student transition programs including Welcome Weekend, Family Weekend, and First Semester Transition Courses throughout the year.
● Research and develop new program initiatives to support various student populations
● Communicate and collaborate with other offices to assist in the design and execution of outstanding orientation programs
● Assist in hiring, training, and coordinating student leaders supporting new student and family-focused programs.
● Support new student and family transition programs for special populations including but not limited to transfer, commuter, Veteran, international, post-traditional, online, low income, underrepresented and underserved students.

Timeline:
● First-Year GAs preferred. Available to start beginning Summer 2024. If not enrolled in Summer 2024 classes, individual will be hired as an hourly, temporary employee with Assistantship beginning in Fall 2024.

Period of Appointment:
● Graduate Assistantship will begin Summer 2024.

Average Number of Hours Required each week by Graduate Assistant:
● 20
● Work generally occurs between M-F, approximately 8am – 5pm.
● Work may include night time commitments (after 5pm)
● Work may include weekend time commitments

Salary Information:
● $560 semi-monthly stipend.
● Opportunity for summer employment at an hourly pay rate if not enrolled for summer.
