Under the direction of specialized professional staff, SIUE Campus Recreation Graduate Assistants are responsible for assisting within their area of specialization in addition to supporting the collective team effort of the Campus Recreation Department. Graduate assistants typically oversee some level of student personnel and are charged with harnessing their work potential while contributing to the development of all students.

Aquatics (anticipated opening Fall of 2021 – The application period will begin in December of 2020)
Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Recreational Programs, the Graduate Assistant (Aquatics) is responsible for planning, development, and implementation of all aquatic related activities in the SIUE Vadalabene Center Indoor Pool – (1) 25M Pool, 6 lanes. The responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to developing and conducting training in-services for 15-25 lifeguards; recruiting, training, scheduling and evaluating lifeguards, along with staff development; creating aquatics programs and activities that impact 10,000 annual users; managing the aquatic facility; and assisting with student payroll, budget planning, policy development, and the equipment inventory/purchasing process as necessary. Additional responsibilities may include assisting with campus-wide special events as well as departmental wide programming through the Rec. Programming office. This individual will also assist in all related administrative duties. Morning and/or evening work is required to supervise programs, activities, and facilities and maintain adequate contact with participants and staff. Some weekends will be required.

Member Services & Operations (anticipated opening Fall of 2022 – The application period will begin in December of 2021)
Provide leadership and work with all facets of Member Services and Operations with a significant emphasis on Reception Desk and Equipment Issue student staff management, scheduling, training, and evaluation. Other areas of responsibility include but not limited to reconciling daily deposits, monthly reports to other SIUE departments, student staff development, and evolving needs of Campus Recreation. This position also supervises activities and events housed within the exclusive recreational space of the Student Fitness Center and the shared recreation space in the Vadalabene Center and other auxiliary facilities (200,000 total sq. ft.). A combined workload of an average of 20 hours per week is expected with some early morning, evening, and weekend work required.

Facilities & Operations (anticipated opening Fall of 2022 – The application period will begin in December of 2021)
This position is leadership focused, requiring accountability, attention to detail, risk management awareness, and personnel management. It oversees and supports the activities housed within the dedicated recreational space of the Student Fitness Center and the shared recreation space in the Vadalabene Center and other auxiliary facilities (200,000 total sq. ft.). These facilities include a total of six basketball courts, 25-yard pool, two climbing areas, two group fitness rooms, cycling room, multisport court, two informal fitness/strength areas, a dedicated weight room, track, racquetball courts, multipurpose areas, and two member service stations all of which operate seven days a week. Additional areas of responsibility to be focused on student staff development and other departmental needs. A combined workload of an average of 20 hours per week is expected; some early morning, evening, and weekend work is required.

Fitness (anticipated opening Fall of 2022 – The application period will begin in December of 2021)
Under the direction of the Fitness Program Coordinator, the Graduate Assistant (Fitness) is responsible for providing assistance in the coordination, guidance, supervision, and direction of fitness programming and service components of the Campus Recreation program. The Graduate Assistant (Fitness) will oversee operations related to personal training programing (managing 25+ clients and events), group fitness programming (managing 26-30 group fitness classes/week), and wellness center operations including fitness assessments using MicroFit® software and fitness consultations. The Graduate Assistant (Fitness) will oversee Group Fitness Instructors (approximately 11 student instructors and 4 adjunct instructors) and Personal Training Staff (approximately 8-10 students). The Graduate Assistant (Fitness) will assist the Fitness Program Coordinator in developing schedules, hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating the fitness program staff, placing clients with personal trainers, creating continuing education opportunities for staff, and teaching the ACE Personal Training Prep Course. In addition, the Graduate Assistant (Fitness) will assist in developing, organizing, implementing, and evaluating fitness-related educational programs and special events for the SIUE community. Evenings and/or weekend work is required to supervise programs, activities, and facilities to maintain adequate contact with part-time staff.

Fitness Operations and Student Development (anticipated opening Fall of 2022 – The application period will begin in December of 2021)
Under the direction of the Fitness Coordinator, the Graduate Assistant (Fitness Operations and Student Development) is responsible for providing assistance in the coordination, guidance, supervision, and direction of informal fitness operations. This includes assisting in developing schedules, hiring, training, supervising, evaluating up to 25 fitness attendants, and maintaining and troubleshooting equipment in the main facility, and six satellite facilities. Equipment includes cardio, selectorized strength, plate loaded, free weights, and racks/platforms. Based on experience, the Graduate Assistant will also provide instruction for cardiovascular and resistance training exercises, proper spotting techniques, and guidance on appropriate practices for fitness attendants. The Graduate Assistant will assist with hiring, training, and development opportunities for all Campus Recreation Student Employees; this includes tracking potential employees, new employee orientations, annual training, employee appreciation events, and incentive and deficiency processes. Additional responsibilities include assisting with Wellness Center operations, special events, and some administrative duties. A combined workload of an average of 20 hours per week is expected; some early morning, evening, and weekend work is required.

Marketing (anticipated opening Fall of 2021)
Reporting to the Director of Campus Recreation, this person is responsible for leading the department’s comprehensive marketing program. Provide leadership and direction for all marketing and promotions efforts for Campus Recreation. Provide assessment feedback for marketing efforts and refine, improve, and enhance future marketing strategies. Personnel supervision, development and other duties as assigned. This position offers opportunities for creativity, innovation, and teamwork to promote the programs, services, and facilities of Campus Recreation. A combined workload of 20 hours per week is expected.
Competitive Sports Programs (anticipated opening Fall of 2021)
Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Recreational Programming, this person is responsible for assisting in the planning, development, and implementation of all individual and team sports activities and Campus Recreation programming within the Programming Office. Other responsibilities include but are not limited to: assisting with and developing new training programs for student staff clinics; recruiting, training, scheduling and evaluating student employees, along with staff development; promoting and marketing the intramural/club sports/ Campus Recreation and campus-wide special events; and assisting with budget planning, budget oversight, fundraising, policy development, facility management, and the equipment inventory and purchasing process. A combined workload of 20 hours per week is expected, with the expectation that many programs and needs will occur on evening and weekend hours.
Sports Medicine (anticipated opening Fall of 2021)
The candidate will be assigned to cover club sports as well as assisting with intercollegiate athletics coverage. The candidate reports to the Head Athletic Trainer of Intercollegiate Athletics and the Interim Director of Campus Recreation. The candidate must subscribe to the SIUE Principles Governing Athletics and Campus Recreation. Students in this position will develop skills in sports and rehabilitative medicine, human relations, organization and management of healthcare facilities, supervision, and teaching skills, and communication and documentation skills. Duties include:
- Provide sports medicine coverage for events and practices assigned
- Assist with insurance documentation
- Maintain medical records
- Supervision and instruction of student-athletes
- Other duties as assigned
Candidate must be available for evening and weekend events and must comply with University, Conference, and NCAA rules and regulations.
