SIUE Recreation Coordinator (Operations)
Job Description:
The Recreation Coordinator serves on a team of staff that are responsible for providing direction, organization, guidance and support within a comprehensive university recreation setting. This person oversees and exercises independent judgment and initiative in managing recreation facility operations. The Coordinator specifically leads a team of building service workers including a fulltime sub-foreman, two fulltime building service workers and several student custodians. The Coordinator also supervises a graduate assistant (operations/climbing) and is a significant component in the team leadership model over student facility supervisors. The Coordinator will be a leader in directing, and maintaining informal recreation facility use operations and work cooperatively with all program areas of Campus Recreation.
This position will oversee and support activities housed within the dedicated recreational space of the Student Fitness Center and the shared recreation space in the Vadalabene Center and other auxiliary facilities (200,000 total sq. ft.). These facilities include a total of six basketball courts, 25-yard pool, two climbing areas, two group fitness rooms, cycling room, multi-sport court, two informal fitness/strength areas, a dedicated weight room, indoor jogging track, racquetball courts, multipurpose areas and two member service stations. These facilities typically operate seven days a week and serves approximately 250,000 uses per year representing a diverse patron population.
Key Duties and Responsibilities

Aid the Assistant Director and facilities operations team in overall operational management of the indoor recreation facilities. Provide oversight to all activities that occur during assigned shift coverage to include safe and appropriate informal recreation, fitness, sport and program activities. Remain current and fluent with best practices and industry standards from NIRSA, The American College of Sports Medicine and/or other fitness, recreation and sport organizational authorities as they relate to recreation facility operations.

Oversee all in-house custodial services and climbing gym operations staffing to include day-to-day operations and special event facility setup and teardown responsibilities resulting from internal and external events in the Student Fitness Center and Activity Center. Supervision of personnel includes a building service worker sub-foreman, two building service workers, one graduate assistant and small teams of student climbing attendants and student custodians. Initiate and track facility maintenance services to include repairs and projects. Coordinate maintenance and repair of Campus Recreation user lockers in the indoor facility.

Collaborate within the Campus Recreation Facility Operations Team to determine the level of event support needed and accommodate, delegate and instruct others on the responsibilities involved, including being the liaison to coordinate any needs from other providers such as SIUE Facilities Management to facilitate ongoing operations and/or the execution of any event as needed.

Collaborate with the Assistant Director and contribute to the overall administration of the Student Fitness Center and Informal Recreation including specific responsibilities for custodial equipment and supplies in addition to assisting with budget, policies, overall equipment inventory and other related tasks.

Exercise independent judgment, initiative and problem solving skills to initiate appropriate action to resolve all user issues, both complex and routine, related to the use and operation of the facilities and services provided by Campus Recreation during assigned shifts. Enforce policies and procedures and initiate correspondence and or conduct occasional meetings with policy violators with support and coordination from the Dean of Students Office, as applicable. Act in place of the Assistant Director during their absence.

Assist in the general marketing, promotion and awareness efforts of the Campus Recreation unit in all engagement opportunities related to this position. Seek out opportunities to engage and educate users and potential users about opportunities to participate in Campus Recreation within the appropriate appropriate policies and procedures.

Prepare, analyze, and be responsible for daily reports, ongoing participation statistics, weekly payrolls for assigned areas, budget submittal, and annual goals and objectives. Lead and coordinate the annual equipment inventory process to be in full compliance with the requirements and procedures of SIUE Property Control. Use analysis of data to make decisions regarding offerings, equipment purchases and facility development.

Exercise independent judgment, initiative, and problem solving skills to initiate appropriate action to resolve any and all issues, both complex and routine, related to the use and operation of the facilities and services provided by Campus Recreation during scheduled Facility Supervisor shifts. Enforce departmental policies and procedures and conduct minor disciplinary hearings as applicable, involving the Dean of Students or other offices as appropriate.
Knowledge and Skills
The position functions under limited supervision, requiring a knowledge of department policies and procedures. The Recreation Coordinator (Operations) must have a complete understanding of the Student Affairs philosophy as it relates to the provision of recreational and leisure services to a University community. The Coordinator is expected to have knowledge and direct experience operating recreational facilities and services. Must work effectively with all constituencies. The person must have an understanding of fiscal management and planning specific to equipment purchasing, equipment upkeep and staff payroll. The Coordinator must possess strong oral and written communication skills, and management/supervisory skills. A Master's Degree in Exercise Science, Recreation, Sports Management, Physical Education, or closely related field is preferred. One year of experience managing informal fitness, fitness services and corresponding staff in these areas is required.
Responsibility
Assignments and actions come from departmental policies and procedures, as well as past practices. Independent judgment is required to interpret and apply policies and practices. The Coordinator is responsible for developing and revising policies and practices to reflect current conditions. The Coordinator is responsible for ensuring all work, travel, and program practices conform with established and accepted safety standards. On occasion, specific assignments are given by the Assistant Director or Director. These assignments may be verbal or written. The Coordinator is responsible for investigating new trends and guiding the direction of their responsibility areas to meet anticipated needs.

Anticipated Work Schedule (some minor flexibility available in regards to daily start/end times)
Fall/Spring: Monday – Friday, 9am-5:30pm with occasional nights or weekends as needed
Summer & Semester Breaks: Monday – Friday, somewhat negotiable depending on employee preferences within operational needs.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
CREDENTIALS TO BE VERIFIED BY HUMAN RESOURCES PLACEMENT OFFICER
- Any one of the following, from the categories below:
- Master’s degree in a field relevant to the position (e.g., Kinesiology, Sports Management, Exercise Science, Recreation, or closely related field)
OR - Final semester or completed Graduate Assistantship with campus recreation or similar department performing duties for two (2) academic years consistent in area of specialization inherent to the position. *
OR - Bachelor’s degree in a field relevant to the position (e.g., Kinesiology, Sports Management, Exercise Science, Recreation, or closely related field)
AND
One (1) year (12 months) of work experience in the promotion, design, development, and/or administration of recreational programs.
OR - 4 years (48 months) of work experience in promotion, design, development, and/or administration of recreational programs, intercollegiate athletics, campus recreation, park district or similar organization that provides similar program.
- Master’s degree in a field relevant to the position (e.g., Kinesiology, Sports Management, Exercise Science, Recreation, or closely related field)

Preferred Qualifications
Experience working within a comprehensive recreation facility with physical features including sport courts, cardiovascular and strength equipment areas, free weights, multisport gymnasium, climbing gym, aquatics, in addition to program and service area support that includes intramurals, club sports, group fitness, member services and equipment checkout. Specific experiences or expertise in custodial operations, climbing operations and/or student development is preferred.

Office Support Associate
Job Description:
Campus Recreation at SIUE is seeking candidates for a full-time Office Support Associate position. The Office Support Associate will have daily interactions with our diverse population including current students, faculty, and staff; club sports and intramural participants; student employees; and Student Fitness Center members. Positioned as the Wellness Center receptionist, the selected candidate will greet visitors, take in deposits for club sports, and help with club sports travel arrangements. The successful candidate will also complete department deposits, make copies, type up reports and forms for vendor payments, process hiring paperwork for student workers, input student payroll, and provide other general office duties. Further duties and responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs and goals of the department.
