The Kevin Johnson Memorial Lecture
This lecture series was initiated in 2017 as a memorial to Dr. Kevin Johnson, a professor in the Department of Chemistry and Environmental Sciences Program at SIUE. Each year a noteworthy scientist in the field of Environmental Chemistry is invited to present a public lecture that is broad in scope.

As part of his Ph.D. thesis research, Dr. Smith worked in Kevin Johnson’s laboratory in Science East. It seems especially fitting that, as we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Johnson lecture, we are able to welcome someone back who has such a direct connection to Kevin, SIUE, and our department.
Dr. Smith’s research examines contaminant exposure among ecological receptors and subsequent physiological and ecological consequences. His research is strategically aligned to support ecological risk assessment which is also his primary teaching emphasis. Current research in the Smith lab examines life-stage specific susceptibility to chemical stressors, aerial transport and unintended impacts of pesticides and pharmaceuticals, and pollinator ecotoxicology. He is an editor of the international scientific journal Environmental Pollution, and associate editor of Environmental Toxicology & Chemistry.
