Outstanding Graduate Assistant
David Groves
Department: College Student Personnel Administration/Department of Educational Leadership- Graduate Research Assistant
Nominator: Christine Crowder
"As a member of Cohort III in the College Student Personnel Administration program, David has always demonstrated great leadership skills in our program. He assisted in the development of a peer-mentoring program for incoming students in the program to assist with getting acclimated to the program. David worked tirelessly in the Kimmel Student Involvement Center to ensure that the student body is engaged in every aspect of student life and the program while at SIUE. He currently serves as Chi Sigma Alpha, Alpha Alpha Chapter - Co-Chair. He recently was responsible for the induction of twenty new members into SIUE's Alpha Alpha Chapter of Chi Sigma Alpha. On a monthly basis (or when time permits), David and the other executive board members plan social activities for graduate students within the College Student Personnel Administration program. He is always willing to lend a helping hand to others in need. For these reasons, I highly recommend David Groves as an outstanding graduate assistant."
Ivan Solis Cruz
Department: University Housing
Nominator(s): Scott Baietti
"Ivan has been an incredible contributor to University Housing, the Division of Student Affairs and the University in general almost immediately since he started in 2016. Ivan's two greatest strengths are his ability to ask the questions that need to be asked and his student centered mindset in every detail of his work.
There is a joke about Ivan that pretty much anyone who has worked with him knows... He always has "a quick question." Sometimes this really means a long question with a preamble, or sometimes this means three or four questions, or sometimes it really is a quick question, but you can never really know for sure what type of question it is until after he's started. What you can count on is his questions will likely make you reflect on your own processes and values. "Are we really doing what we say we're trying to do through this [fill in the blank (process/ policy/ action/ program/ etc.)]?” That's the real question Ivan is helping us all to see. When asked about his work specifically in his program of study, CSPA Program Director Dr. Pietro Sasso said, "Ivan has really been an exceptional student in the SIUE CSPA program. In his role as an Assistant Community Director at SIUE and as a practicum student with Center for Diversity and Inclusion at Washington University, Ivan has a broad perspective regarding the role of education and the student. Ivan consistently met the challenges and exceeded the requirements of what was typically expected from an emerging educator."
Kari Kolle
Department: Campus Recreation
Nominator: Amanda Couch/ Margaret Fredericksen
Nominator 1: Amanda Couch
"Kari is currently finishing her second year as the Facilities GA for Campus Recreation. Her positive, can-do attitude, attention to detail and willingness to jump in and help whenever necessary has helped strengthen our team. As the supervisor for our undergraduate student supervisors, Kari not only articulates our expectations well, but also demonstrates the characteristics and actions necessary to thrive in this important role. Kari has jumped at opportunities to continue to help beyond her normal duties with special events taking place in our facility. She also continues to seek opportunities to grow as a professional. She most recently represented SIUE by presenting, alongside two other SIUE Campus Recreation colleagues, at the Illinois Intramural-Recreational Sport Association at Illinois State University and will again present at the NIRSA Annual Conference on March 6 in Denver, Colorado. Her dedication to service for our department is apparent and I have no doubt she will be a successful Campus Recreation and Student Affairs professional."
Nominator 2: Margaret Fredericksen
"Kari Kolle is the Facilities Graduate Assistant for the Department of Campus Recreation, where she has many duties including supervising student employees of the Student Fitness Center. Kari holds herself to a high standard of performance and easily sees the big picture and mission behind each facet of Campus Recreation. Kari readily and frequently sits on event and program committees and jumps at the chance to be connected to anything new where she may be able to help and learn something."
Kiah Earl
Department: Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs - Prevention Education and Advocacy Center (PEACe)
Nominator(s): Samantha Dickens
"Kiah is an outstanding graduate assistant because she embraced a new position in a new office. She acknowledged the instability and put her efforts into creating a foundation for her position and PEACe's work on campus. Kiah has eagerly taken every opportunity for learning through trainings provided by our community partners, webinars, and independent research. She has promoted PEACe's mission and efforts on PEACe's social media, her social media, in her work with other programs and agencies in the community, in her personal life by helping people find resources, and by collaborating and networking to bring PEACe and other programs together to enhance our work and our impact. Kiah has enthusiastically tackled every new project and asked for more responsibility. This led to her planning her own campus-wide program that was incredibly successful in bringing together a diverse group of faculty, staff, and students to encourage supporting sexual assault survivors and bystander intervention. She has also brought other students into PEACe's work to volunteer at program events, create promotional materials, and plan educational programs. Kiah is unfailingly dedicated, motivated, and inspired by the work of PEACe, and she encourages a high energy, productive, and fun work environment. Kiah is an asset to Student Affairs and hascontributed monumentally to the success of the PEACe."
Rachel Dunning
Department: Kimmel Student Involvement Center- Graduate Assistant for Community Engagement and Fraternity and Sorority Life
Nominator: Tyler Manning & Sarah Laux
"Rachel has been a true asset to the fraternity and sorority community at SIUE. She serves as the advisor for Order of Omega, the advisor for the Interfraternity Council, and works with seven chapters across all councils. During the last year, Rachel joined Chi Sigma Alpha, the Student Affairs Honors Society, in recognition of maintaining at least a 3.75 GPA in her graduate studies. Rachel also has had the opportunity to work Dance Marathon. Rachel has done a great job holding members of this team accountable to stated goals and actions. She recognizes value in holding students to high expectations and ensuring they follow through with the work that the students have been assigned.
Rachel recognizes her areas of growth and works to improve in those areas. Rachel advises with passion and support. She understands each student is an individual learner and tailors her advising style to support each student’s specific needs. She can be described as caring and willing to go above and beyond in any role. One student stated that, “Rachel is one of the best advisors that I have had the privilege to work with at SIUE. She cares about helping me grow as a leader and a woman. I could not have asked for a better mentor to help me with some of the greatest challenges I have faced.” We believe SIUE students have been positively impacted by the leadership and advisement of Rachel Dunning. She is a premier example of what it means to be an engaged and dedicated graduate assistant."
Husna Ibrahim
Department: Disability Support Services
Nominator: Andrew Koch
"As the DSS GA, she has implemented dynamic new awareness programming initiatives. The "Intersectionality in Disabilities" event she led in celebration of SIUE's Disability Awareness Month, in October 2017, provided an opportunity for representatives of myriad campus affinity groups to meet and discuss the common shared experience of marginalization, focusing on disability being a point of intersectionality that connects all groups, as well as the empowerment afforded by inclusion and collaboration. Ms. Ibrahim is currently in the final planning stages for an April 2 event she has entitled "The Silent #MeToo: Women with Disabilities and Sexual Violence" in partnership with the PEACe Office, Women's Studies, the Office for Institutional Diversity and Inclusion, and Illinois Imagines.
Outstanding Student Affairs Newcomer
Olivia Lennon
Department: University Housing
Nominator(s): Sarah Kirkpatrick
"I am nominating Olivia Lennon for this award because she truly embodies a “Student First” mentality in her work as the Evergreen Hall Community Director. She has gotten to know the students in Evergreen and is able to greet them by name as she walks through the wings. She will always drop what she is doing if a student comes in with an issue, and she is thorough in responding to all questions and concerns, even when parents call. Even though this may sound routine, Olivia does this while completing space change requests, conducting meetings, program shopping, staff one-on-one meetings, area council programs, and supervising both an undergraduate staff of eleven and a graduate assistant. Within University Housing, Olivia serves on a few committees and is always prepared and ready for any work that comes her way, making sure she meets deadlines. Olivia has a reputation for being a reliable campus partner, having worked with members of Counseling Services, Career Development, Advising, and Campus Recreation, to name a few, on providing programs and services to the students of Evergreen. She follows through on all of her commitments and she does all of this while maintaining a positive attitude. She is definitely a cheerleader for her students and coworkers and is most deserving of the Outstanding Student Affairs Newcomer Award."
Nicholas Rachowicz
Department: MUC Administration
Nominator: Eileen Martindale and Kelly Jo Karnes
Nominator 1: Eileen Martindale
"Nik has done a phenomenal job maintaining and improving the Student Success Center over the last year. There have been improvements made that have made a positive difference in arriving to work each day. A specific example would be his determination to fix the first floor women's bathroom after several unfortunate years of unfavorable bathroom conditions. The staff of the Student Success Center appreciates this improvement, as well as current students and visitors. Nik's efforts never go unnoticed. Thank you, Nik!" (Eileen Martindale)
Nominator 2: Kelly Jo Karnes
"We have truly been blessed to have Nik Rachowicz join our MUC team as the Associate Director. Nik provides the leadership in working with our building service workers (custodial staff) and daily facilities management of two buildings. The thing I appreciate about Nik is his willingness to do anything needed in the effort to get the job done. He picks up trash, moves chairs, and will push a broom if needed, to insure our guests in the building have a great experience. I think that Nik is a great asset to the MUC and Student Affairs." (Kelly Jo Karnes)
Stacie Colclasure
Department: Kimmel Student Involvement Center
Nominator: Michelle Welter
"Stacie joined the team in the Kimmel Student Involvement Center as an Office Support Specialist in August 2017. From the first day she walked into our office, we knew that she was going to make a positive impact on our team and on our students. Stacie always greets you with a smile. She truly wants to get to know you as a person so she can assist you better on a day-to-day basis. Stacie primarily works with Student Government which brings its own unique set of challenges, but she has faced them head on and handled every curve ball thrown at her with ease.
Stacie has high expectations for herself which shows in the quality of her work and the level of service she provides to everyone she encounters. She isn't afraid to ask questions to ensure she doesn't give a student the run around. As she becomes more comfortable in her role, she is truly becoming a great advocate for the students she works with to ensure they get the support they need on a daily basis. We so appreciate her!"
Samantha Dickens
Department: Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs
Nominator(s): Kara Shustrin
"Samantha Dickens joined Student Affairs in February 2017 to serve as project coordinator for our Department of Justice Office of Violence Against Women on campus grant program. But Samantha does SO much more than that at SIUE! Her enthusiasm, creativity, and dedication have moved us forward as an institution regarding gender-based violence awareness, prevention, and education. Samantha started in the middle of an academic year, which is always challenging...but she jumped in with both feet and started building relationships immediately. Her experiences as a victim advocate have proven invaluable as we navigate how to support those who have encountered gender-based violence. Our Coordinated Community Care Response Team (C3RT) is growing in membership and outreach. Our educational programming is at an all-time high. Samantha has developed a robust social media presence and is constantly looking for ways to meet students where they are and to engage them in ways that are comfortable given this weighty issue. I am excited to see what Samantha has in mind for her next year at SIUE!"
Donald Reynolds
Department: Cougar Store Receiver/Storekeeper
Nominator: Emily Colton
"I nominate Donald Reynolds for Outstanding Student Affairs Newcomer Award. Donnie has been working full-time at The Cougar Store since January of 2017. Before that, he was a student supervisor at Textbook Service and, before that, was a student employee there. Donnie has always demonstrated outstanding service to both Textbook Service and The Cougar Store. He is a hard worker, but is also always cheerful, helpful and friendly, creating a great positive work environment for all. He is passionate about working in SIUE's Student Affairs division. He is an SIUE alumnus and loves this institution. Donnie has great energy and enthusiasm for his job and makes working with him or being his customer an enjoyable experience. Always willing to help doing whatever is needed, Donnie is a great team player. The students he has supervised love him and vice versa. He is continuing his education by taking two courses each semester. He loves SIUE and shows his great school spirit with everyone he knows. He has strong potential for future leadership roles in the Division of Student Affairs. I highly recommend him for this award. I cannot think of anyone I know who deserves it more."
Front Line Service Superstar
Kathy Carr
Department: Career Development Center
Nominator: Eileen Martindale
"Kathy has done a tremendous job supporting the Career Development Center staff during many hiring transitions. She always have a positive attitude about taking on new tasks that are always thrown her way. She has stepped up to train new staff members, student workers and Graduate Assistants. Kathy values our students and truly takes the time to address each student individually. Kathy continues to go out of her way to give outstanding service and has a special way of making each student feel welcome in the Career Development Center."
Vickie Sumner
Department: Student Government
Nominator: Vivian Rodgers
"Ms. Vickie has always been extremely helpful. Anyone who has worked with her can tell you that she will go above and beyond to help you. She goes out of her way to help the students with programming issues and other areas. I have seen her working diligently with students trying to figure out and solve their issue with their respected student organizations. I have seen her offer counsel to many students who are always seeking her out for advice or just a listening ear. She loves SIUE, but she loves the students more. When you visit an office and need help, it is always refreshing to be encountered by someone who offers that help without making you feel like a bother. That is exactly how Ms. Vickie approaches students and staff!"
Tiffany Williams
Department: Facilities Management
Nominator: Nicholas Rachowicz
"Quiet, reserved, and until recently, on midnights in the Morris University Center, Tiffany Williams has been a champion of care for the MUC and has shown dedication to her work. As a Building Service Worker, Tiffany worked quietly and with a passion to give the best of herself and provide the “best foot forward” for the Morris University Center. Never being stopped by others with bad intention or drama, Tiffany was a positive energy who demonstrated pride in the mission of the MUC and the Division of Student Affairs. Tiffany worked on a shift where she interacted with overnight dining staff, facilities personnel, and MUC early birds where she prepared and allowed others to make the MUC ready for opening each day. It's neither a glamorous shift nor an easy one to enjoy, but she made the best of it with a cheerful attitude and a friendly smile greeting everyone she met. When it would be easy to sit around and not do much, it was easy to see what she accomplished or that we were unprepared when she was not at work. Her great efforts reflected positively on herself, the operations team, and what could be accomplished by BSWs as a whole. Her attitude screams sub-foreman in the making! While she recently moved over to Facilities Management with the renovations to the operations department, she has can and hopefully will come back again!"
Ben Moyer
Department: MUC Administration
Nominator: Dani Kroenke
"Ever have an issue in the MUC with a projector, laptop, or truly anything that plugs in? Well, Ben has probably had a positive impact on your event just as he had on the numerous students and student events he assists daily. Ben always steps up to the challenge and ensures that our students receive the best service possible with it comes to Tech Services here at the MUC. Ben is knowledge in his position, provides excellent customer service, and continues to look for ways to improve the MUC. His impact can be seen through the student workers in Tech Services as well as the successful events that occur in the MUC daily. "
Vivian Rodgers
Department: Kimmel Student Involvement Center
Nominator: Sarah Laux
"Vivian Rodgers is the ultimate Front Line Service Superstar at SIUE. Since she began working in the Kimmel Student Involvement Center, she has approached everyone and everything with a smile, excellent work ethic, and positive rock star attitude. She is truly the glue that holds Kimmel together. Our students’ and customers’ needs are always her top priority and students frequently come into the office to chat with Vivian. It is obvious she creates a positive environment for them to share their good, bad, and ugly with her. She genuinely cares about the well-being of our students and goes above and beyond to encourage them, never stopping short of providing them with motivating quotes, cards, and even snacks or meals, just to show that she is thinking about them. Vivian is a proud SIUE Cougar and has represented Kimmel and the Division of Student Affairs on several committees, including but not limited to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Luncheon Planning Committee and the Student Affairs Staff Development Committee. Her dedication and motivation to enhance to the SIUE and Student Affairs community is outstanding. She was also SIUE November 2016 Employee of the Month."
Vivian Rodgers
Department: University Housing
Nominator: Rex Jackson
"When I think of who is a Front Line Superstar I think of Karen Ash. Karen is the office supervisor for University Housing. In this role, she works closely with the residents of Woodland Hall and staff across a variety of areas in University Housing. She is dedicated, hardworking, and very caring. While Karen works at Woodland Hall, her influence is felt throughout University Housing whether it is through her supervision of the Office Support Associates in the other halls or working to address Woodland Hall resident concerns with keys, space changes, or mail problems. Karen always comes to work with a smile and a warm personality that creates a welcoming environment for staff and students. She also is great at keeping folks in line, like when we forget to turn in receipts or forget to let her know to expect a charge because we took residents bowling on campus. And, when it comes to working with students, there is no one who does it better. Karen has always gone above and beyond for our students. I have witnessed her pick up the phone and call other offices to connect a student, print out resources and information a student may need and even pull out her sewing kit and sew on a button for a student in need. After more than 20 years of service to University Housing, our students and staff wouldn’t be nearly as successful without her contributions to their work and their experience. In closing, Karen Ash brings an ethic of care to the work that she does in University Housing. I could not imagine what University Housing would be like without her dedication to the department, the staff, and the students. She does so much to keep us moving forward in our work, and I know that does not always get the recognition it deserves. In the end, I think all I have to say, regardless of the outcome of this process, is that Karen is our superstar, and we are so very grateful for all she does."
Champion of Diversity
Natalie Hawkins
Department: Campus Recreation
Nominator: Tom Doughtery
"Since arriving at SIUE, Natalie has always had a mindset to help students. She tries very hard to ensure our campus recreation programming is inclusive and diverse. Early on in her tenure at SIUE she took a personal effort to grow our Women's Intramural Sports teams by personally creating teams and inviting women to play with her in basketball. One of her continuing challenges to our programming staff is what are we offering to every student at SIUE in campus recreation programming? Most recently, she has worked with Alpha Psi Lambda to help them plan an event in our pool titled "Que No Pare La Fiesta!" She has also worked closely with our Cougar World Games event and invited SIUE students/staff from around the globe to participate in our Interaction Zone. She shares information with the International Student Office personally inviting students to fun events such as Glow Zumba, Badminton, or the annual Late Night with Campus Recreation. Last month Natalie attended the Emerging Recreation Sports Leaders Conference at Florida International University. The conference prepares young minority students and professionals in the field of campus recreation and shares discussion and ideas to bring back to their campus. One of her goals was to share her experiences with young minority students with hopes of attracting aspiring future graduate students/professionals from diverse backgrounds to SIUE. Natalie is very deserving of the Champion of Diversity Award."
Dr. Earleen Patterson
Department: SOAR Director
Nominator: Kelly Jo Karnes
"I would venture a guess that there are very few underrepresented students on campus who don’t know Dr. P. She has been a mentor, advocate, and cheerleader and often provides tough love to all of the students who seek her out. She has been a partner and collaborator as we have revived the Black Graduation Celebration for our graduating students. She helped start Black Girls Rock and serves as the campus advisor for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Dr. P.’s commitment to our students is amazing; she truly defines being a champion of diversity."
Rex Jackson
Department: University Housing
Nominator(s): Eileen Martindale / Michael Schultz
Nominater 1: Eileen Martindale
"Rex has continued to provide the Career Development Center with the outstanding opportunity to learn more about diverse populations on campus. He has collaborated with a Career Counselor one-on-one to update handouts, presentations and other materials to create a more inclusive environment for all SIUE students and, specifically, transgender students. Rex also presented incredibly valuable information to the Career Development Center staff on ways we could better serve the transgender population. Rex has made a positive impact on this campus through his work with University Housing and through his leadership with SafeZone."
Nominator 2: Mike Schultz
"Rex Jackson has led University Housing to meet its diversity statement of engaging students in educational experiences in an open, civil, and respectful climate that will prepare them for global citizenship and lifelong learning. Rex has done this by leading Residence Life with the vision to train University Housing student staff with an open mind and to treat all SIUE students with respect. Rex is the one who proposed and helped implement the SIUE gender inclusive housing community. Since 2012, that community has supported 279 students in a safe environment that they call home. That proposal placed SIUE as the first University in the state of Illinois to have gender inclusive housing. Rex is also University Housing’s main contact with our Transgender students who want a safe and supporting environment to live in either on campus or off campus. Rex is a past chair of Safe Zone, which grew under his leadership. Rex continues to contribute to Safe Zone and supports our students with a safe community. He has been involved with Rainbow graduation since its inception. Rex would be a deserving candidate to receive the 2018 Champion of Diversity award."
Unsung Hero Award
Roselin Rhodes
Department: MUC Operations
Nominator: Nicholas Rachowicz
"The mission of the Morris University Center is excellence in service, quality, collaboration, building community, student development, and sustainability. This is a tough bridge to cross when you are working a job that never seems to be done. Nonetheless, Rose Rhodes never stops striving for excellence in her role as a Building Service Worker. Each day, Rose Rhodes comes to work in the Morris University Center with a smile on her face. Having been in the building for several years, she knows the ins and outs of the building, and she is a familiar face for most people in the University Center. She maintains a positive relationship with students and staff alike. When it’s easy to get frustrated with a messy student or a dirty office, Rose takes it in stride. Rarely getting rattled, no matter what is happening, Rose is always reliable and working behind the scenes to make sure things are tidy, and we present a great face to the public.
She is determined to make each student’s visit to the University Center an enjoyable one. First and foremost, she is a leader. She is interested, not only in getting her own work done, but in the development and well-being of the others on the shift that she supervises. Recently, the Operations side of the MUC began a renovation process. As a qualified sub-foreman, Rose was quick to step up and lead her shift on many occasions. Some staff was new to working with one another and Rose doesn’t want any drama! Rose cheerfully directs workers on her shift in a way that both supports each one and is fair all around."
Vickie Sumner
Department: Kimmel Student Involvement Center
Nominator: Michelle Welter
"When I think of an ""Unsung Hero"", the first person I think of is Vickie. Vickie truly goes above and beyond on a daily basis to ensure that ALL SIUE students have a positive experience when they interact with our office. Vickie is our account technician, so her job revolves around our budgets, but she provides so much more than that. For the countless students that she interacts with on a daily basis, Vickie becomes a little piece of positivity on campus. Vickie doesn't just provide a necessary service to our students, she truly gets to know them. She knows their names, their current news, and their struggles. She asks about their families, their pets, and their school work. An avid musician herself, when a student is performing in the Goshen Lounge, Vickie will be the first one to sit and support them. When Vickie feels that a student or an organization needs a little extra help, she jumps in and will move mountains to ensure they have a good experience.
As a member of our staff, Vickie brings a sense of humor and a caring and compassionate soul to our team. After working with her nearly a decade, I cannot imagine our office without her. Vickie is more than deserving of this recognition."
Dave Slazinik
Department: MUC
Nominator: Kim Olson
"Dave is the second shift Building Service Worker at the MUC. He supervises the production staff that consist of all students. Dave always comes to work with a positive attitude and bright outlook. With his experience in the building, he is a valuable source of information. Dave has a phenomenal work ethic and an uncanny ability to motivate his staff. He challenges the students to better themselves in and out of the classroom. Dave plays a major role in the success of the events being held in the MUC and the success of his staff. He is truly deserving of this award."
Laurie Schade
Department: University Housing Facilities Management
Nominator: Kim Watson
"It is with great pleasure to nominate Laurie Schade for the Unsung Hero Award. Laurie has worked in a variety of roles on campus and is committed to providing exceptional service to our students. Laurie is the mastermind when it comes to coordinating University Housing Facilities Management’s multilayered summer transition plan. Laurie enjoys the logistical challenges of our summer process, even when we threw in flooring project in the mix. Laurie may get a little feisty with our staff or contractors but she never lets the “unexpected” get her flustered. Our success depends on having supplies on hand so work can be completed in a timely fashion. UHFM area has been going through some transitions, and when one of our critical positions became vacant, Laurie stepped in without hesitation or complaint. Laurie assessed the challenge in front of her, created a plan and remained diligent with ordering supplies and paying bills. Several staff members have praised Laurie’s efforts; they talked about her strong work ethic as well as her ability to get things done and provide a little humor on the side. I know UHFM is in a better place because Laurie saw a need and stepped up. She created efficiency in the office which created efficiency in our workflow which resulted in better quality service to our residents. Thank you Laurie for your exceptional service to UHFM and our residents."
Civic Engagement and Public Outreach Award
Lisa Thompson-Gibson
Department: Counseling Services
Nominator: Jessica Ulrich
"Lisa has done a phenomenal job of coordinating iCare's effort of working to increase collaboration across campus to promote suicide prevention. She has developed partnerships with various on-campus entities (Public Health students, iCare Student Advisory group and iCare Executive Council) along with the Nursing and Pharmacy programs. In addition, she developed partnerships with Centerstone, the Karla Smith Foundation, the St. Claire County and Madison County Suicide Prevention Alliances to collaborate on suicide prevention efforts. She has gone out of her way to conduct training for individuals to recognize warning signs of suicidality as well as to empower faculty and staff members to feel more comfortable dealing with students in distress. She has done a wonderful job of coordinating various outreach efforts to demystify and destigmatize mental health--Send Silence Packing, Fresh Check Day, multiple Depression Screening Days, and screening of the S Word documentary. She coordinated the partnership of iCare collaborating with the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention (AFSP) for the annual Out of the Darkness Walk that occurred in the SIUE Gardens, and she is coordinating with Centerstone for the upcoming free screening of The Ripple Effect by Kevin Hines. In addition, she has facilitated the coordination of an upcoming Suicide Prevention Conference in the fall of 2018 that will coordinate with various off-campus partners so iCare can host an all-day workshop that will end with Frank Warren speaking in the evening. Lisa has done a tremendous job with civic engagement and public outreach, all while concurrently serving as a staff counselor."
Friends of Student Affairs - Staff
Cheryl Jordan
Department: Academic Advising
Nominator: Eileen Martindale
"Cheryl Jordan is a wonderful example of a true SIUE campus partner and friend of Student Affairs. Although she is busy in Academic Advising, she is always willing to lend a hand to any Student Affairs campus event. Cheryl has, time after time, volunteered to stand out in the freezing cold and summer heat for the simple reason that she wants to help students more. She has also assisted students at the Cougar Career Closet which is no small endeavor. Cheryl enthusiastically helped with students’ fashion decisions and folding clothes throughout the day. Cheryl, your positive attitude and support for SIUE students and Student Affairs is appreciated!"
Gail Munneke
Department: Research and Projects Fiscal Management
Nominator: Samantha Dickens
"Gail Munneke dove feet first into a large-scale grant from the Department of Justice with cheer and motivation. The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) grant is a three-year grant with a large budget that requires a sharp eye, a brilliant mind, and a willingness to collaborate, all traits which Gail has displayed time and again. Gail has worked extensively with the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Prevention Education and Advocacy Center (PEACe) to modify our budget so that we have funds to use in productive ways. Due to Gail's tireless efforts, constant open communication, and willingness to meet face to face with little notice, the VAWA grant has been used to fund salaries, facilitate large-scale events, such as Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, to engage students in sexual assault prevention, and purchase Green Dot materials to market and engage students in bystander intervention efforts. Gail is a huge force in the culture change we are sparking at SIUe, and I truly believe we would not be making the progress we are without Gail's substantial contributions of time, work, communication, and positive outlook."
Emily Skowron
Department: SIUE Athletics
Nominator: Philipp Leyerer
"Over the past few years, Emily has done an amazing job building and strengthening the great relationship between the SIUE athletic department and SIUE Campus Recreation. Emily played a huge part in working with the SIUE Club Sports and Intramural department on finding more ways to give our students more access to recreational activities (such as practices and playing fields) by offering available space in the athletics facilities (Korte Stadium, Roy E. Lee Field and the Instructional Gym in the Vadalabene Center)."
Sherrie Senkfor
Department: Human Relations
Nominator: Michael Schultz
"Sherrie Senkfor may have the toughest position within SIUE. If there is a policy change or state law change, Sherrie is the one that needs to share that message with each individual employee and negotiate that into the many different bargaining units’ contracts. If there is a payroll error, Sherrie hears that issue, even if it is not caused by Human Resources. If there is an employee that is not performing to University standards, it is Sherrie who assists staff to make improvements, or she may be the one who has to give unpleasant news. Nevertheless, with all of those issues that hit her on a daily bases, it is under her leadership that she has brought change to SIUE. Under her vision and leadership, SIUE now has transparent Human Resources Policy and Procedures, the hiring process has been brought into the 21st century with the implementation of Hiretouch, the Employee Excellence Program has been implemented and trust has been established with our bargaining units. Not only does Sherrie volunteer at Housing move in, but also she encourages her staff to connect and welcome our students to campus. Sherrie has also been a mentor for Lady Cougar basketball and International students. Sherrie will be retiring in May and what a better way to recognize her contribution to Student Affairs than by awarding her the 2108 Friend of Student Affairs Award for Staff."
Peter Clifford
Department: Office of the Registrar
Nominator: Vivian Rodgers
"This campus runs because of the interconnectedness of all of the departments, and the strength of that connection depends on the relationship between the people who work here. I have had the pleasure of working with Mr. Peter Clifford during my three years here at SIUE. He has always been very kind and cordial in all of our interactions. I have worked and conversed with many people across campus in various departments. I can truly say that he is by far one of the kindest employees on this campus. We had only conversed via email up until a few months ago. I saw him walking and recognized his photo. I couldn't miss the opportunity to introduce myself to a person who has always been kind and courteous in our email exchanges. Many times people take kindness for granted, and I wanted to make sure that he knew how much I appreciated his kindness and professionalism."
Friends of Student Affairs - Faculty
Dr. Jessica Harris
Department: Provost and Vice Chancellor
Nominator: Andrea Keller
“Campus Activities Board (CAB) believes that Dr. Jessica Harris is more than deserving of the Friend of Student Affairs Faculty Award. CAB has partnered with Dr. Harris on several events in the last year. Each event was organized by a different group of students; however, each group was left with the same impression. Every student felt as though Dr. Harris truly cared about the success of the program and that she served as a valuable resource for them.
CAB believes that Dr. Harris consistently brings every value of the Division of Student Affairs to the table when working with students. She demonstrates the value of student centeredness by consistently being willing to meet the students where they are. She understands that some of the most impactful moments do not happen during work hours and is always willing to assist with programs no matter the time. She is the definition of being student friendly and living out student pride by continuously advocating for students and serving as a mentor. As previously mentioned, she an invaluable resource to SIUE and to our students. She is well respected by students, faculty, and staff alike. Something that would not be possible if she did not execute student focused and student caring behavior. Dr. Harris has served as a collaborator on countless other programs and projects within the Division. She has and will continue to be an amazing partner and contributor to the Division of Student Affairs."
Dr. Dennis Bouvier
Department: Computer Science
Nominator: Vicky Dean
"Dennis is in his 11th year volunteering for University Housing's Faculty Fellow program. He has served for more years (consecutively!) than any other faculty member on campus. Over the years, Dennis has scheduled weekly visits to the Engineering FIC and frequently has dinners with students and the RAs.
I asked our current staff members for quotes about Dennis and this is what they had to say:
- Resident Assistant Kade Walters shared a great memory about Dr. Bouvier, “When he took my wing to the Robotics lab for a social, my engineering students thought it was a cool experience and some even joined the club because of it."
- Community Director Scott Baietti said, "Dennis has been a committed Faculty Fellow. He truly understands the value of making connections beyond the classroom and uses the Housing Faculty Fellow program as a medium for this. During my time here, after many years as a Faculty Fellow already, he took on the role as Chair of the Computer Science Dept. No one would have faulted Dennis if he bowed out as a Faculty Fellow during that time, but he remained committed and met with the RA and residents in our computer science FIC, sharing fellowship and becoming a mentor to many of them. The 10+ years of Dennis’ dedication to the FF program truly embodies the student centered mission of SIUE."
I couldn't say it any better!"
Dr. Connie Frey-Spurlock
Department: Sociology
Nominator: Sarah Laux
"Dr. Frey-Spurlock has collaborated with Student Affairs, specifically the Kimmel Student Involvement Center and Community Engagement, for the last several years to create enhanced opportunities for students by way of student organizations, community service, and service-learning. Connie is a remarkable colleague and collaborator. Her energy and motivation to create rich experiences for students is inspiring. She takes great care in creating and sharing experiential and transformative learning opportunities for students. She is an enthusiastic educator and advisor to the Sociology Club and Student Organization for Sustainability."
Dr. Trish Oberweis
Department: Sociology and Criminal Justice Studies
Nominator: Kara Shustrin
"Dr. Trish Oberweis is a true ally for students and for the work we do in Student Affairs. Dr. Oberweis has worked tirelessly to ensure that our campus is a safe community for those who may have experienced gender-based violence in the past, and to educate students, faculty, and staff to prevent this type of violence in the future. She conducted a campus-wide climate survey to better understand where our students are regarding this issue, and this information was critical in obtaining our 3-year Department of Justice Office of Violence Against Women on-campus programs grant. Dr. Oberweis donated her expertise to help write this grant, and she also served on the team to select our online sexual assault prevention-training program. She encouraged students in her classes to preview the training so we would have honest feedback and opinions and could select the best option. Her recent remarks at the "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes" event were powerful and provided a call to action for our community. Dr. Oberweis pretty much always says, "Of course I will help." despite her very busy schedule! Thank you Dr. Oberweis for being a great friend of Student Affairs at SIUE."
Dr. Chris Gordon
Department: School of Engineering
Nominator: Susan Seibert
"I would like to nominate Dr. Chris Gordon, SIUE School of Engineering, for the Friend of Student Affairs - Faculty award. Dr. Gordon has provided ongoing and consistent support to the Career Development Center (CDC) and our operations. His support has helped the CDC continue to flourish during some difficult financial times the last few years. Dr. Gordon was a strong supporter of the CDC during our move from state funding to student fee funding. He served on our first ever fee review advisory board and provided thoughtful feedback throughout that process. Dr. Gordon has also worked with several CDC staff members on a number of educational programming initiatives including the implementation of a CDC presentation to all incoming freshmen in the School of Engineering during Springboard to Success and a new Engineering Mentor Mixer event in partnership with the Alumni Association. In addition, his ongoing encouragement of students in the School of Engineering to attend workshops, events, and career fairs hosted by the CDC has proven invaluable in increasing participation from these students in our ongoing activities."
Dr. Pietro Sasso
Department: College of Student Personnel Administration
Nominator: Christine Crowder
"Dr. Sasso has gone beyond the call of duty on many occasions in the College of Student Personnel Administration graduate program. He has grown the program by leaps and bounds by forming partnerships with local area colleges and universities to benefit all students in the program. He never gives up and advocates for all students. He is generous with his time. Dr. Sasso has displayed great organizational skills and has excellent communications with his peers and students as well. Also, he takes the initiative to identify problems and devise solutions. His role requires strong communication skills, and he has shown that he not only has these skills but that he also has the ability to inspire respect and cooperation in teammates. This is why I highly recommend Dr. Pietro Sasso for the Unsung Hero Award."
Friends of Student Affairs - University Department
Human Resources
Department: Human Resources
Nominator: Michael Schultz
"One of the unsung departments within the University, which touches every unit within Student Affairs, is Human Resources. They provide the resources so that we may recruit and retain the most qualified staff to serve our students. Human Resources are committed to providing programs and services that support the University's mission and core values of citizenship, excellence, integrity, openness and wisdom. They assist in the recruitment, development and retention of qualified employees and provide programming to enhance the organizational effectiveness of the University. The challenge of giving two raises to many different groups this year was not a simple task. The staff put in many late nights to make sure that SIUE Faculty and Staff were compensated in a fair and timely manner. They were also the office that took the heat for the State not paying the insurance companies so that the insurance companies could pay our providers. The service that we have received with Benefits, Employment, Labor Relations, Payroll, and Information Systems within Human Resources, deserves the 2018 Friend of Student Affairs for a University Department."
Narbeth R. Emmanuel Outstanding Service Award
Mike Schultz
Department: University housing
Nominator(s): multiple
Nominator 1: Kelly Jo Karnes
"I would describe Mike Schultz as Mr. SIUE! I am not sure that the average staff or student understands the tremendous impact that Mike has made on SIUE. The reason that we are a residential campus is because of Mike. He has built every residence hall on this campus and truly is the institutional memory for Student Affairs. He is my “go to” for advice on facilities issues and is the keeper of all policies for campus. Mike is a trusted colleague and friend and is more than worthy of this award. I hope you take the opportunity to recognize Mike for his true service to SIUE."
Nominator 2: Susan Seibert
"Mike Schultz represents all of the qualities of this Outstanding Service Award. Mike’s dedication to SIUE, to University Housing, and, most importantly, to SIUE students is at the forefront of all of his work. While he is a stickler for policy and procedure and a strong fiscal manager, he always maintains a student-centered approach in all that he does. Mike is a mentor to students and to his colleagues and helps in the professional development of the next generation of Student Affairs professionals. Mike leads by example and can be counted on to provide honest and constructive feedback for the betterment of the organization. He is strong collaborative partner and is willing to share his knowledge, resources, and time to assist other departments and colleagues. For all of these reasons, I am happy to nominate Mike Schultz for this much-deserved award!"
Nominator 3: Mallory Sidarous
"It is my pleasure to nominate Mike Schultz for the Outstanding Service Award. Mike is a true leader who embodies the student first philosophy in both his leadership of the housing department and in his personal interactions with students. Under Mike’s leadership, SIUE transitioned from a commuter to residential campus with an impressive housing operation, including the building of four residence halls. His commitment to student-centered operations in housing includes a housing-specific facilities management operation and technology that gives residents ownership in their housing experience. He is not complacent with the status quo, but is always pushing his staff to re-evaluate processes and try something new, especially when there is the potential to improve the student experience. SIUE was one of the first housing operations in the country to implement Roompact, an online system making roommate agreements, space changes, and student interactions easier for student staff and student residents. I am a better professional from working with Mike for the past 10 years. His student first approach has influenced and shaped countless professional and student staff over his career, and without a doubt, working with him has made each of us better."
Debbie Goestenkors
Department: MUC Admin
Nominator: Nicholas Rachowicz
"In my short time here, I have known Debbie Goestenkors to be an invaluable resource to our Department and many others in the building. Debbie brings a wealth of history and knowledge to every problem presented to her. She is truly the “knower of all things.” When she doesn’t know the answer, she will work tirelessly to find it out. She constantly goes above and beyond to make sure the problem presented will not be on anymore. I’m pretty confident she could hold down our MUC fort without most of us!
Debbie has her systems. I don’t know them nor can I make heads or tails of them, but Debbie has a handle on everything that happens in our office. No matter how many papers, folders, or other items fall onto her desk, she seems to not only file them away but absorb all of the data in to her memory and is ready for the answer when one of us in the office forget a day or two later. She coordinates many things with many units in this building and others. She keeps it all straight so the many moving parts at this end of campus can run smoothly. Specifically, while my areas have been short staffed, she has helped me to keep my head above water while I have tried to restore our staffing.
People have no interest in talking to me. On the rare occasion Debbie leaves for a day or two, the rest of us muddle along trying to make do without her. Trying to be helpful, I will answer the phone. "
