Dr. Angel Jones, SIUE Visiting Assistant Professor and Critical Race Scholar, Spotlighted in National Media
Angel Jones, PhD, critical race scholar and visiting assistant professor in the SIUE School of Education, Health and Human Behavior’s (SEHHB) Department of Teaching and Learning, discussed the fallacies of “racial reckoning” occurring today as it relates to Blacks exacting justice and/or receiving payment for past racial wrongs and crimes.
Jones was featured on “The Special Report” with Areva Martin on YouTube and Facebook Live.
In response to white backlash, Jones responded: “Part of white privilege is the centering of their own feelings. Their feelings shouldn’t overrule what has happened to our community. I don’t call people out, but call them higher. I believe people genuinely want to do better, which is why I focus my work on educating people.”
Jones has also been featured in a Forbes article on critical race theory (CRT).
“Critical Race Theory is important, because it encourages us to examine the roles that race and racism play within the systems in this country,” informed Jones. “It also allows us to value the experiences of Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC), folks who are usually silenced and pushed to the margins.
“The main reason CRT is seen as problematic is because people aren’t educated as to what it really is. Instead of doing their own research, they are getting their information from the media and politicians who have been intentionally misrepresenting it.”
