Scholarship History
The Meridian Scholarship, first named the Chancellor's Scholarship and then the Presidential Scholarship, began in 1978. In 2008, minor selection process edits were made and the permanent Meridian Scholarship name was solidified. Selection criteria changes and an official review process were implemented for fall 2016 and beyond. Interview invitations were initially only extended to 100 students, but the field has expanded and 160 students currently interview for the Meridian Scholarship.
"To be a Meridian Scholar is to be the noon-day sun. It is to be a seeker after truth—an illuminator. A meridian line marks an arc on the globe, running north and south, where the sun is at its apex. At the mid-day—the medius dies—the potential for illumination is greatest. So, scholars, be that illumination and carry the light of knowledge through the world. Use that light to point the way to our shared futures."
