Understanding the Name of the Game: Inside a National Science Foundation (NSF) Panel Review

Marc Rigas is a faculty member in the College of Information Sciences  and Technology at Penn State University. He was  previously a program officer at both the National Science Foundation  and the National Institutes of Health and Associate Director of the  Strategic Interdisciplinary Research Office at Penn State. Elizabeth Seidle is the training grant coordinator with the  Strategic Interdisciplinary Research Office at Penn State. Marc and Liz  have presented similar workshops to different audiences at universities  and at international research conferences.

You  have your research ideas and goals in mind. After pouring over an NSF  solicitation and crafting your proposal, you submit it to NSF, but what  happens on the other side of the electronic  wall? 
 
Fully  understanding the post-submission review process enables you to write a  proposal that gets the attention of panelists and the NSF program  staff. Through a shared experience that includes  a mock peer review panel, this workshop will help participants  strengthen the alignment of their grant writing to sponsors’ interests  and interact productively with agency program officers. We will talk  about how panelists are selected, how panel orientations  are conducted, and the structure of the NSF and how targeting the  proposal to the right area can make a difference.
