Description: |
Interested in exploring how you can incorporate sustainability into your curriculum? Are you thinking about developing a new course or new modules in an existing course? Incorporating sustainability issues into the curriculum can be as straightforward as asking the question, “what sustains us?” You are invited to participate in the 2017 Mississippi Project VII: “Green Curriculum, Green Campus, Green Community.” We welcome you to enhance your teaching through engagement with questions of sustainability by participating in the 7th annual Mississippi Project, August 14, 2017. The Mississippi Project is modeled after the Ponderosa Project at Northern Arizona University and the Piedmont Project at Emory University, which have both drawn national attention for their innovative approach to curricular change. The workshop will explore how we can meaningfully integrate the sustainability – broadly defined – into our classrooms. The workshop will also introduce the new SIUE Successful Communities Collaborative as a new sustainability initiative. Though we start by taking a close look at SIUE and the larger St. Louis region, we invite participants to think glocally. Members of the campus and local community will facilitate and catalyze a discussion of a green curriculum and its integration and role in the broader community. Participants will have opportunities to extend research and teaching horizons across disciplines and create new networks with fellow colleagues from SIUE and the region. Workshop facilitator, Connie Frey Spurlock (Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice Studies) attended the Sustainability across the Curriculum Leadership Workshops in 2010, led by the founders of the Ponderosa and Piedmont Projects. She has co-facilitated the Mississippi Project since its inception. Katy Mike Smaistrla, Sustainability Energy and Environmental Coordinator for the Office of Environmental Health and Safety at the University of Missouri St. Louis, is a past participant of the workshop co-facilitated the Mississippi Project VII @Harris-Stowe State University: Infusing Sustainability Across the Curriculum earlier this year. If you are interested in participating, please email a short statement of how you plan to change an old course, develop a new course, or add a new module to: Connie Frey Spurlock, cfrey@siue.edu Deadline: August 4, 2017 |
