Overview of edTPA

As of January 2020, all information on these edTPA pages is under construction.

The edTPA (formerly the Teacher Performance Assessment) requirement is a high-stakes assessment that is required for teacher licensure in Illinois. It cannot be waived or dismissed.

To complete this examination:

  • Each teacher candidate in Illinois must submit a video-recorded learning segment, student work samples, and written documentation to the Pearson Company midway through their student teaching semester.
  • It is crucial that teacher candidates have multiple opportunities to practice video-recording of their teaching.
  • Teacher candidates must also have multiple opportunities to practice planning, delivering, and assessing instruction.

If an SIUE candidate’s edTPA submission is not deemed acceptable by the external evaluators contracted through the Pearson Company, the candidate will have the opportunity to revise or remediate this first submission. Failure to pass the initial or subsequent submissions will mean that the candidate cannot be licensed to teach in Illinois.
