Applied Communication Studies

Tara Thornton is an Instructor of Applied Communication Studies at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. She earned her M.A. in Corporate Communication in 2000 and a B.S. in Speech Communication and Business Administration in 1998 from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Thornton teaches a variety of courses such as Interpersonal Communication, Public Speaking, Small Group Communication, Interracial Communication, Listening, and Interviewing. She is currently working on developing online communication coursework to facilitate the RN to BS program within the Nursing Department. She has published academic book reviews and has presented papers and workshops at conferences of the National Communication Association and the Central States Communication. Thornton serves as Co-Director of Undergraduate Studies of Applied Communication Studies and as advisor for two honorary societies on campus: The National Society of Collegiate Scholars, a nationally recognized honor society with chapters across the United States, and Lambda Pi Eta, a Communication Department honorary chapter. She stays involved with her community and donates her time for various school activities and fundraising events. On a personal note, Thornton enjoys spending time with family and friends and travelling to new destinations. She recently explored several islands in Greece and went zip-lining through the rainforests of Costa Rica. Tara is a dance mom (but not the crazy kind). When she isn’t teaching, she is likely attending a dance competition as she cheers her girls on to victory.
