2008 Distinguished Research Professors

rszula and another Distinguished Professor

Urszula Ledzewicz, Distinguished Research Professor of Mathematics and Statistics, has sustained an extraordinary record of research and scholarly activities since her promotion to professor in 1995. She brings national and international recognition to her department, having published over 60 articles since promotion to the rank of Full Professor and received 5 major NSF research grants, three for international collaborative research.

Paul Dresang, Distinguished Research Professor of Art and Design, has sustained an extraordinary record of creative activities since his promotion to professor in 1988. He  brings national recognition to his department having steadfastly pursued his creative research independently and through internally and externally funded projects. Dr. Dresang received the prestigious National Endowment for the Visual Arts Fellowship Grant.
2008 Paul Simon Outstanding Scholar Award Goes to Albert Luo
Albert Luo Albert Luo is recognized through the 2008 Paul Simon Outstanding Scholar Award for his work in the areas of advanced dynamic systems and nonlinear vibration analysis, and for his exemplary work with students in the classroom and research lab. As demonstrated in his remarkable dossier, not only is Dr. Luo’s scholarly productivity unprecedented in the School of Engineering, but his teaching is also exemplary, marked by an enthusiasm that ignites the imagination of undergraduate and graduate students alike. Dr. Luo has the enviable gift of bringing to light highly complex concepts to the level of undergraduate students in the classroom.
Allison Thomason Receives the 2008 Hoppe Research Professor Award
Allison Thomason The ninth recipient of the Hoppe Research Professor Award is Allison Thomason, Associate Professor in the Department of Historical Studies, for her work on ancient Mesopotamian textiles and how they serve in the negotiation of human agency and identity. Professor Thomason's Hoppe award will result in a complete book manuscript about the way that textiles and dress help to create personal and institutional identities in ancient Mesoptomia (roughly the equivalent of modern Iraq). This project continues Professor Thomason's long and active research agenda on objects and identity in ancient Mesopotamia. Whereas her prior research had concentrated on the relationship of Mesopotamian male elites to their material world, this new exploration would converge on two major factors involved in the production and consumption of textiles: gender and class. Professor Thomason hopes that her examination of this topic will bring new understanding to the culture of Mesopotamia--and ultimately to our own modern world of fashion consumption--through new approaches to identity coming from the fields of material culture and dress studies.

Faith Liebl Receives the 2008 Annette and Henry Baich Award

Faith Liebl

Faith Liebl, Department of Biology, received the 2008 Annette and Henry Baich Award. Faith received her Ph.D. in Neurobiology from the University of Illinois at Chicago where she studied glutamate receptor expression at the Drosophila neuromuscular junction. She went on to do her postdoc examining synaptic patterning of the Drosophila antenna lobe for which she received a NIH Postdoctoral National Research Service Award. Faith is finishing her first year at SIUE. Her lab is interested in learning and memory, specifically the mechanisms that regulate glutamate receptor expression and localization.

Lucian Stone and Guim Kwon Receive Vaughnie Lindsay New Investigator Awards
Guim Kwon Lucian Stone
Dr. Guim Kwon received one of two 2008 Lindsay New Investigator Awards. Guim is an outstanding scientist with a strong research background in diabetes research. Since joining SIUE in 2005, Dr. Kwon has also received a new investigator award from the American Association of Colleges and Pharmacy. Dr. Kwon's research will focus on the relationship between obesity and type 2 diabetes. Her project aims to study the effects of adiponectin on pancreatic ß-cell growth and proliferation. Dr. Lucian Stone is an exceptional scholar who has already achieved international recognition for his research on Farid al-Din 'Attar. Dr. Stone came to SIUE in 2005 with an impressive publication record, including a co-edited edition of The Philosophy of Seyyed Hossein Nasr (2001) to which he contributed a chapter and bibliography. He has published several book chapters and articles in leading publications in the fields of philosophy, intellectual history, and mystical literature.
