What is a Federal W-4 Personal Withholding Allowance Form and how do I complete it?

A W-4 form is an IRS form that allows you to determine the amount of federal tax you want withheld from your pay. The IRS form can be found on our Web site: http://www.siue.edu/human-resources/forms/index.shtml or directly at: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw4.pdf?portlet=3. The number of allowances claimed on both W-4 forms determines the amount of taxes that will be withheld.

The more allowances claimed, the less tax that is withheld. However, the IRS has requirements that employees have to pay in a sufficient percentage of tax due for the year or face penalties.
