Can I use FMLA for a sibling or a member of my family who doesn't live in my household?

FMLA can only be used for family members listed in the first question. Sick leave may be used for illness and injuries of family members other than those in the households of employees when approved under an FMLA leave.  Employees may also use their sick leave that would be accrued over a 6-month period of time for absences due to an illness, injury, or medical appointment of the employee's spouse, same sex domestic partner as recognized by the State of Illinois, Civil Union partner, children, parents, step-parents, brothers, sisters, grandparents, grandchildren, and corresponding in-laws for those not living within the houselhold. Please see the sick leave policy for your employee classification type for more information. This policy is separate from FMLA but may be taken concurrently with FMLA if applicable. If the family member is not eligible for FMLA, sick leave will be charged.
