Happy Retirement to Professor Emerita Rowena McClinton, PhD!
Professor Emerita Rowena McClinton retired after 21 years at SIUE in summer 2020. What a time to retire!
While we could not have any in-person celebrations due to the pandemic, we did get to say, “On to your next phase!” to our friend and colleague, who was gifted with an inscribed vase (pictured). We are also especially grateful to Dr. McClinton for endowing the "Dr. Rowena McClinton Excellence in History Education Award" for under-represented students.
Dr. McClinton sends these words to our readers:
"Dear Students and Colleagues,
I would like to thank SIUE students, colleagues and administration for the joy these past 21 years have brought to me. Retirement evokes bittersweet thoughts. First of all, I miss the electricity of classroom students and the companionship of belonging to a vibrant SIUE community and Department of History; but those very memories live on within me as special times I encountered with every class I taught.
I was awarded unique opportunities to share knowledge, lifetime experiences and values with another generation. My job at SIUE was a trophy - it was also a gift - and now I am continuing a research and publishing career. I want to continue to bring the past alive with narratives and voices that have gone unheard in the historical records."
