Dr. Ruff Nancy coordinates the SIU Summer Ancient Legacies Study Abroad Programs, which has been going on for 12 years at SIUE. This initiative involves SIUC and includes study abroad trips to Greece, Egypt, Turkey, and Italy. The goal is to immerse students, alumni, and community members in the culture of the ancient Mediterranean world. Each two-week program takes participants (students and non-students alike) to explore the ancient culture of one region of the Mediterranean world. The programs include faculty-guided lectures at archaeological and historically important sites, hand-on projects re-enacting ancient cultural practices, such as performing an ancient Greek play in an ancient theater and carving/painting limestone tablets with hieroglyphs and images from tombs and temples in Egypt. Students can earn up to six semester hours of credit in a number of fields. Support for the initiative currently comes from participants' fees and from donations made by former participants. Apart from teaching these credit-bearing programs, Dr. Ruff also gives presentations for on-campus and community members throughout the year.
