Student Responsibilities
Students are expected to actively engage in their academic success by:
- Knowing your major, minor, and degree requirements
- Scheduling and preparing for advising appointments
- Using Degree Works to monitor degree progress
- Reviewing your curriculum and staying up to date on degree requirements
- Becoming familiar with the Undergraduate Catalog and following academic policies
- Checking CougarNet and your SIUE email regularly
- Participating in co-curricular and career development activities
- Responding to surveys, assessments, and questionnaires
- Taking an active role in your own academic success
Advisor Responsibilities
Academic advisors support student success by:
- Clearly communicating degree, major, minor, and general education requirements
- Teaching students to use Degree Works, CougarNet, and other advising technologies
- Encouraging reflection, goal-setting, and informed decision-making
- Using technology and resources to empower students to take ownership of their progress
- Providing timely guidance and referrals to campus resources as needed
- Staying up to date with advising best practices
- Preparing for advising appointments and anticipating potential challenges
- Maintaining a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment
- Encouraging students to engage in co-curricular and career development opportunities
