Student–Advisor Responsibilities

Academic advising at SIUE is a collaborative partnership that promotes student learning, personal development, and timely progression toward degree completion. Advising is a shared responsibility grounded in Care, Integrity, Inclusivity, and Empowerment, the core values of NACADA: The Global Community for Academic Advising. Your advisor is your strongest advocate on your SIUE journey!

Student Responsibilities

Students are expected to actively engage in their academic success by:

  • Knowing your major, minor, and degree requirements
  • Scheduling and preparing for advising appointments
  • Using Degree Works to monitor degree progress
  • Reviewing your curriculum and staying up to date on degree requirements
  • Becoming familiar with the Undergraduate Catalog and following academic policies
  • Checking CougarNet and your SIUE email regularly
  • Participating in co-curricular and career development activities
  • Responding to surveys, assessments, and questionnaires
  • Taking an active role in your own academic success

Advisor Responsibilities

Academic advisors support student success by:

  • Clearly communicating degree, major, minor, and general education requirements
  • Teaching students to use Degree Works, CougarNet, and other advising technologies
  • Encouraging reflection, goal-setting, and informed decision-making
  • Using technology and resources to empower students to take ownership of their progress
  • Providing timely guidance and referrals to campus resources as needed
  • Staying up to date with advising best practices
  • Preparing for advising appointments and anticipating potential challenges
  • Maintaining a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment
  • Encouraging students to engage in co-curricular and career development opportunities
