First Generation
Being a first-generation college student means you are achieving something powerful and sometimes navigating systems that may feel unfamiliar. At OFTA, we believe access to clear information and strong support networks makes all the difference.
Tips for First-Generation College Students
Seek Help Early
Use tutoring, Success Coaching, and advising from the start. Don’t wait until you’re struggling.
Study with Peers
Join study groups with motivated students who encourage accountability and learning.
Get Involved
Join clubs or organizations that match your interests or academic goals to build connections and a sense of belonging.
Build Your Support Network
Include family, advisors, mentors, friends, and campus resources. Reach out and stay connected.
Plan Finances
Understand your financial aid, explore scholarships, and meet with Student Financial Aid for guidance.
Manage Your Time
Expect to spend about two hours studying for every one hour in class. Balance work, activities, and academics carefully.
Believe in Yourself
College is challenging, but you belong here. Stay persistent, seek support, and trust your ability to succeed.

Share Your Story
First-generation students strengthen the SIUE community through resilience, leadership, and determination. Your experience matters and your story can inspire future Cougars. We invite SIUE students, alumni, faculty, and staff who identify as first-generation to share their journey in higher education. If you are connected to SIUE as a student, graduate, faculty member, or staff member, we would be honored to highlight your story.
Consider sharing:
- What motivated you to pursue a degree
- Challenges you navigated
- Resources that made a difference
- Advice for incoming first-generation students
Submissions may include a short paragraph, video, reflection, or photo.
