Exploratory/Meta-Majors
At SIUE, we recognize that selecting an academic major is a significant decision for students and their families. Meta-Majors provide first-year students with a structured and academically purposeful pathway through which they may explore related fields of study while completing a common foundational curriculum. Established in 2021 by Dr. Efrosini Hortis, Director of the Office of First Year and Transitional Advising, the Meta-Major framework is designed to reduce uncertainty, prevent unnecessary coursework, support timely degree progress, and facilitate early engagement with academic advising and career development resources. Through this guided approach, students are able to make well‑informed, confident choices regarding their academic and professional goals, offering reassurance to both students and parents as they begin their university experience.
What Are Meta-Majors?
Meta-Majors are groups of related academic majors within a career area. They allow students to:
- Explore different majors while following a standard first-year curriculum
- Transition into a chosen major without losing time or money
- Reduce uncertainty about general education and major requirements
- Engage in intentional career exploration
- Stay on track even if changing between similar disciplines
- Complete their degree on time

Exploratory Students
Still Exploring?
Students who are undecided or exploring majors will work closely with their academic advisor and the Career Development Center to:
- - Explore majors and career pathways
- - Make an informed decision before declaring a major
- - Stay on track for graduation
Research shows that this support is critical for retention and long-term academic success.
