Building consensus may be the biggest challenge facing urban redevelopers today. After, in most cases, fifty years of urban abandonment and the proliferation of county governments as well as that of smaller municipalities it has become increasing hard for urban centers to act alone in the development process.  After all, most of these surrounding suburbs have become accustomed to developing their own economy and reaping the financial rewards of independence.  In addition, it is increasingly hard to convince a local politician to protect the region first and then their constituency. One could argue, that  modern urban America is seen by many as asking for a free handout from suburban municipalities when cooperation is requested to help rebuild the center of the region.

The following is a list of organization within the  St. Louis metropolitan region whose specific purpose is to promote this cooperation as well as a few that deal with the problems of Urban abandonment.
