Many  issues arise when issues of the environment and its degradation are linked to various kinds of new development.  There are many not-for-profits whose primary purpose is to advocate on behalf of the environment when new development is proposed.  This is a common occurrence in suburban economic development which in a way aids urban redevelopment.  Many of these non-profit organizations work to protect green space found in suburban areas forcing company to look to downtown areas for existing structures or development areas.  In most context the work sprawl is used to define the environmental effects of urban abandonment or of suburban development.

The following are some of the many environmental groups that deal, for the most part, specifically with  development effects.

This the famous Sierra Club web site.  The Sierra Club generally deals with a vast variety of environmental issues.  However there attention to the environmental effects of urban sprawl is very thorough. 

Sprawl watch
Sprawl watch is an organization dedicated to the preservation of urban greenery and  conversely suburban open spaces.

Policy.com
This is a web based organization designed to disseminate information regarding policy decisions that effect the urban landscape.

The American prospect
This focus of this web site is finding solutions to the current epidemic of urban sprawl and its implications.

The Environmental Protection agency
The E.P.A.'s web site.  This portion of their web-site deals specifically with the problems found in urban environments.

Smartgrowth.com
The purpose of this web site is the promotion of sustainable urban growth with a environmentally friendly approach.

The international bulldozer blockade
This web site focuses on the blocking of suburban expansion through community activism.  Groups like this actually help, in many way, urban economic development with the forceful use of the "not in my back yard" technique.

Urban ecology
This is a very good web site that focuses on the redevelopment of out urban centers with a environmentally sensible approach.
