Employs
appropriate models for design and development of instruction, learning
environments, and/or human performance improvement interventions.
Through my
experience at Southern Illinois University I have had the opportunity to design
different units using the
NTeQ (iNtegrating Technology for inQuiry)
model. This model allows educators to implement technology while in the
classroom. The design model includes the standards, how the technology
coordinates with the objectives in the lesson, and allows the instructor to
focus on what the students will do before, during, and after computer use. It
also includes evaluations and assessments for each unit. The following
units were developed with different learning environments, which include both
collaborative learning and independent learning. They also include human computer
interaction as well as with their peers.

Aunt Geegi's Vacation
|
Aunt Geegi is coming
from Sicily, Italy to visit the United States and you are in charge of
planning her trip!
This unit is a Social
Studies unit that demonstrates the use of the NTeQ model, which I create
din IT 500. It consists of
three lessons and the use of the programs Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and TripMaker. Websites are provided to help the students find the
information needed for the project. The students learn how to use Excel
to create a line graph of the temperatures of a particular city for 5
days. In the second lesson, the students create advertisements of
different landmarks in the United States using Microsoft Word draw
tools. Lastly, in the third lesson the students create a PowerPoint
presentation describing the trip through the United States. For
each lesson a task sheet, rubric, and evaluation are provided.
I chose to use the NTeQ model for
the unit to help the students understand the objectives and connections
to the use of technology. I wanted the students to connect with the use
of technology across the curriculum and the use of particular programs
for particular tasks. In order for this to happen they needed to not
only understand the technology, but also the specific programs and the
purpose of those programs. The NTeQ model helps the students
lesson by lesson to stay connected with the objectives. They evaluate
the lesson throughout and help to create a better unit. The NTeQ model
connects the technology use with the objectives to build knowledge to
create a final project. |

Immigration to Ellis Island |
How is immigration
different today as it was in the 1900's?
This unit is a Social
Studies Unit that incorporates English and Language Arts that I created
in IT 481. It consists of
5 lessons and the use of the programs Word and KidZone retrieved from
the Internet. Websites are provided to guide the students through the
lessons so they meet the objectives designated for the particular
lesson. The students begin the unit by listening to the stories of
immigrants off the Internet and typing reflections in Word . Next, they
analyze pictures and watch videos of the immigrants and again type
reflections of the experience in Word. The following lesson allows
students to discover their own family history. They use the information
gathered from their family to create a graph in small groups using the
KidZone- Create a Graph program. The fourth lesson allows the students
to take an Interactive Tour of Ellis Island and type their experience in
Word. The last lesson compares immigration today with immigration in the
1900's. The students read stories from the Internet and compare their
findings to the knowledge they have gained from the unit. For each
lesson websites, worksheets, rubrics, and evaluation forms are provided.
I chose to use the NTeQ model in
this unit because it helped the students to connect the use of
technology with the experience of Ellis Island. The students were able
to take a virtual field trip through Ellis Island. This placed them in
the particular era and helped them to more fully understand the purpose
of Ellis Island. They used different programs to learn about different
topics, from virtual field trips to learning about their own personal
history. This enabled them to conclude the unit with a compare and
contrast lesson about how immigration has changed so much since the
1900's.

Inventions of the 21st Century |
What can
you create for the 21st Century?
In this Social
Studies unit created in IT 572, the students study inventions from the
20th Century. They begin by discussing why the inventions were created
and how it affects their lives today. As a whole class, they will create
a timeline of the inventions and present their discoveries to the class.
Next, they will discuss some inventions they may want to create and why
they would like to create them. In small groups, they will begin
creating an invention by describing it in Microsoft Word and drawing it
in Microsoft Paint. The final product is to create a commercial about
the invention. Each lesson had a reflection, rubric, and discussion. I
created the lessons using a program called ActivInspire, which is used
with Promethean Boards. I exported the lessons to a PDF file so they
could scroll through the lesson outline as they worked. This enabled
them to be more independent and use the technology and each other
throughout the project. This enabled me to be more of a facilitator as
they worked collaboratively on their inventions. The final project
allowed them to learn how to use a digital camera, use the Audacity
program, and Movie Maker. It was a great way to allow the students to
work at their own pace and spend more time on particular lessons. Each
day I took about 10 minutes of teaching and the rest of the time was for
the students. I provided all worksheets, handouts, reflections, and
notes on the school website. This way they could work at their own pace
and I was available if they got stuck. I had to grade each lesson upon
completion before they could go to the next lesson. This made sure they
were on target with each task. In addition, some lessons had a movie
they could watch to help them think and brainstorm about inventions,
which was also placed on the school website
I chose the NTeQ
model because I wanted the students, which were in 8th grade, to
work collaboratively, but also to use other subjects across the
curriculum to learn the importance of technology not only in this class,
but throughout their lives. Technology is an important part of our lives
and I wanted them to see and understand that concept. |
