Many teens have the ability to defy all forms of
logic and common sense on a regular basis.
However, it’s not necessarily their fault.
Their brains are still developing… the part of the
brain that helps them to determine if something is
or is not a good idea, and what are the
consequences of doing/not doing something.
You can help you teen make better decisions by
giving them a process to make decisions... nothing
fancy, just some things to think about. Perhaps something like the below would work for your teen:
Step 1: List your options: The first thing to do is to create a mental or written list of your alternatives.
Step 2: Weigh possible outcome: Through the process of elimination, trim your alternatives down to your best options. Examine each option, consider its pros and cons. Note: this could be a mental or written exercise
Step 3: Ask for advice: If time permits and the situation is serious enough, run some of your options by a few people that you respect and trust.
Step 4: Make a decision: Here, it’s not just a matter of making a decision. It’s also a matter of being prepared to accept the consequences of your decision, whatever they may be.
