Become an FST Mentor
Help new Cougars connect, navigate, and succeed throughout their first semester.
FST Mentors are part of the Cougar Connector team within New Student and Family Programs. They provide peer-to-peer support for new students enrolled in SIUE's First Semester Transition (FST) course, helping new students make connections, navigate campus, and find their place at SIUE throughout their first semester.
Each FST Mentor is assigned by New Student and Family Programs to a group of FST students. Mentors serve as an approachable peer connection outside the classroom -- someone students can turn to with questions, learn from, and connect with as they adjust to college life and the SIUE community.
As an FST mentor, you will:
- Building connections with an assigned group of students enrolled in an FST course.
- Reach out to and engage with students throughout their first semester.
- Share your experiences and perspective as a current SIUE student.
- Help students navigate campus resources, opportunities, and common first-semester questions.
- Encourage students to make connections, get involved, and develop a sense of belonging at SIUE.
- Serve as an approachable and knowledgeable peer resource.
- Connect students with the appropriate SIUE resources and support when they need additional help.
What You'll Gain
Serving as an FST Mentor gives you the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the experience of new students while developing your own leadership skills.
You'll gain experience in peer mentoring, communication, relationship-building, outreach, problem-solving, and student support while helping new Cougars successfully navigate their first semester. You'll also strengthen your knowledge of SIUE and build connections with students, staff, and faculty across campus.
