Activity Report Information - Administrative Work

This page provides advisement for assigning activities for faculty work on Activity Reports.

Support of Students:

  • Direct Teaching of SIUE students on overload: This activity should only include teaching of for-degree-credit courses taught to college-level SIUE students at SIUE. When these conditions are met, you should include the subject, course number, and course section number for any courses you were responsible for teaching or for which you were an instructor of record. If you are scheduled or assigned to teach an active course for a term, you are likely an instructor of record for the course and should report your teaching here.
For-degree-credit courses are any that can produce student credit hours toward an SIUE degree. Examples include but are not limited to lectures, labs, studios, clinics, independent studies, seminars, colloquiums, etc.
  • Student Advisement: Any advisement of SIUE students should be recorded at the appropriate level of Indirect Teaching.
  • Laboratory, Clinic, or Studio Preparation/Procurement of Supplies: As support for academic programs, these activities should be recorded as Indirect Teaching at the appropriate level.
  • Coaching of student athletes: All coaching in athletics should be recorded as Administration & Other Activities Not Elsewhere Classified.
  • Department Chair activities: You are required to report courses taught by Teaching Assistants (TAs) in your department on your activity report as Direct Teaching if your department policy does not allow TAs to take credit for the courses they are assigned to teach. All other non-instructional department chair activities (including scheduling, evaluations, budgeting, etc.) should be recorded as Administration & Other Activities Not Elsewhere Classified.
  • Other Student Academic Support Activities: All other activities in support of student academic and instructional programs should be recorded at the appropriate level of Indirect Teaching.
  • Non-Academic Student Support: Support of SIUE student activities and services beyond the scope of a specific course or academic program should be reported as Administration & Other Activities Not Elsewhere Classified.

Research Center Activities:

  • Grants/External Awards within a Research Center: Grants and external awards might have different functional requirements than the Center that is administering them. Please follow the instructions here if your assigned grant or external award has a function unrelated to Organized Research.
  • Research Activities: Any research activities associated with a separately organized SIUE research unit or its associated accounts should be recorded as Organized Research. This includes the Center for Predictive ANalytics (CPAN), the National Corn to Ethanol Research Center (NCERC), the Interdisciplinary Research and Informatics Scholarship (IRIS) Center, and the Geospatial Mapping, Applications, and Research Center (GeoMARC).
  • Non-Research Activities: All other non-research or otherwise administrative activities in one of these separately organized SIUE research units should be recorded as Other Committee activities, Intra-University Committee activities, or Administration & Other Activities Not Elsewhere Classified. Please review the Administration & Other Activities section below for details.

Public Service Center Activities:

  • Grants/External Awards within a Public Service Center: Grants and external awards might have different functional requirements than the Center that is administering them. Please follow the instructions here if your assigned grant or external award has a function unrelated to Public Service.
  • Public Service Activities: Any activities associated with a separately organized SIUE public service unit or its associated accounts should be recorded exclusively as Public Service. This includes the Center for Advancement of Management and Productivity (CAMP), the Center for STEM Research, Education, and Outreach, the Environmental Resources Training Center (ERTC), WSIE-FM, the University Museum, and the East St. Louis Center.
  • Non-Public Service Activities: All other non-service or otherwise administrative activities in one of these separately organized SIUE public service units should be recorded as Other Committee activities, Intra-University Committee activities, or Administration & Other Activities Not Elsewhere Classified. Please review the Administration & Other Activities section below for details.

Administration & Other Activities:

  • Department or College/School Committees: Committee activities limited to this scope should be reported as Other Committee activities.
  • University-wide Committees: Committee work at the institutional level should be reported as Intra-University Committee activities. This includes University Senates, Councils and Advisory Committees for university-wide issues and events.
  • Administrative staff and Professional staff activities not elsewhere classified: Any SIUE activities of administrative or professional staff employees that are not classified elsewhere on this page should be recorded as Administration & Other Activities Not Elsewhere Classified.
  • Other University Activities: All other activities that do not fall under the categories of instruction, research, or service are considered administrative. You should report these activities as Administration & Other Activities Not Elsewhere Classified.
  • Non-University Activities: Any professional activities that you were not assigned or paid by the university to perform should be recorded as Non-University Professional Activity. All non-university activities that are not performed at a professional level should be excluded from the activity report entirely.
