Accounting
The successful completion of the Uniform Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Exam is required in all jurisdictions of the United States to obtain a license as a CPA. To sit for the CPA exam, an applicant must first provide proof of successful completion of the educational requirements as set out by the Illinois Board of Examiners (ILBOE). To sit for the uniform CPA exam in Illinois, the ILBOE requires applicants to 1) Earn a graduate degree in accounting from a regionally accredited institution or 2) have completed a total of 150 semester hours of college education, including a baccalaureate degree or higher from an accredited college or university. Of those hours, 30 hours must be in accounting and include financial accounting, auditing, taxation, management accounting, research and analysis, and 24 semester hours must be in business courses (other than accounting).
The Bachelor of Science in Accountancy (BSA) is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and provides a solid foundation for students working to meet the accounting and business course requirements providing 120 hours of college credit curriculum designed to sit for the exam. However, the BSA does not meet the educational requirements to sit for the examination as the program does not contain the 150 credit hours required to sit for the examination.
The Master of Science in Accounting (MSA) is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and meets the educational requirements to sit for the examination.
In addition to the educational requirements, the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation may require additional criteria be met for licensure, such as age, examination, residency, citizenship, proof of social security number, ethics exam, experience requirements, participation in international programs, etc.
Prior to enrolling in the program, a student should contact the state board regulating accountancy in the state they wish to practice for the most complete and up to date information. In Illinois, https://www.ilboe.org/.
