Services and Resources
ACCESS strives to create an accessible, inclusive campus community. In collaboration with campus partners, we offer services, accommodations, resources and support to maximize access and opportunity and promote student success.
Access and Functional Needs Registry
The office of Accessible Campus Community & Equitable Student Support (ACCESS) and SIUE University Police have partnered to offer voluntary access to an Access and Functional Needs registry. The purpose of this program is to allow students and their families an opportunity to provide tailored, emergency-focused information to first responders for students with specific needs (i.e. autism, mobility issues, deaf/hard of hearing, visual impairment, mental health, etc.), ensuring police and crisis intervention teams (CIT) can respond appropriately. Information regarding a student's disability is protected under confidentiality as well as FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act), and as such, information shared will not be part of any public record.
Service and Support Animals
Depending on the specific type of animal, service, service in training and support, students have differing responsibilities in terms of approval to be on campus or in campus buildings.
Dietary Accommodations
If you have a severe food allergy, celiac, or other physiological condition requiring dietary restrictions or accommodations to the dining meal plan, please register for ACCESS services.
Housing Accommodations
University Housing facilities are accessible to students with disabilities. Each living area has living units available that are specially designed for students with disabilities and meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Students with disabilities needing accommodations are asked to indicate their needs on the University Housing Application as well as completing the online Accommodation Request Form through ACCESS. Reasonable accommodations will be made for any student documenting a disability.
Accessible Wayfinding
Our goal is to create inclusive and accommodating navigation systems for individuals regardless of their physical or cognitive abilities. One such way we support students is through use of applications like NaviLens.
Veteran Students
Each year, ACCESS assists more than 300 students with a variety of disabilities as they pursue their academic disciplines. ACCESS also has services which students can use to increase skills in learning, time management, and test-taking. Both accommodations and services are offered to students with disabilities who have provided documentation of disability and are approved through the application process.
Disability Grievance Policy & Procedure
The grievance process for disability services allows individuals to formally address complaints regarding discrimination,
service quality, or violations of rights. All University discrimination complaints fall under the Non-Discrimination and Non-Harassment Policy and Complaint Procedures - 2C7 & 3C6 which covers discrimination/harassment based on all protected identities, including sex.
For specific inquiries or assistance you can contact the Office of Equal Opportunity,
Access and Title IX.
Course Substitution Policy & Procedure
The Course Substitution Policy and Procedure allows students to replace a required course with an alternative course that has similar content or learning outcomes, often due to barriers that exist due to a documented disability. This process requires a formal petition, and department approval as well as appropriate documentation to maintain degree integrity.
