FOOD & HUNGER

The number of people suffering from hunger in the world today is unknown.  Malnutrition leads to the death of more people than hunger by causing weakness and susceptibility to disease.  The leading cause of hunger is poverty, making food too expensive at any price.  The use of a region’s resources to produce food and livestock for export rather than domestic consumption also contributes to the problem.  Most cases of starvation and malnutrition occur among the poor, especially women and children. With developments in science and technology, however, the world’s production of food has increased more than enough for every person to have enough to eat.  The Green Revolution brought new agricultural technology to the third world. Aquaculture leads to larger harvests of fish from inland and coastal waters.  Biotechnology and genetic engineering are creating new species of plants and animals, though not without controversial consequences.
