Creativity to Teach, Curiosity to Learn, Courage to Serve, Compassion to Care, in a diverse and complex world, SIUE Nursing: Excellence in Action!

These phrases from our School of Nursing mission statement greet visitors, students, faculty, and staff in the form of hanging ceiling banners visible on the second floor of Alumni Hall where the SON offices are located. It is our way of educating everyone about whom we are and what we are about.

The SIUE, School of Nursing is a dynamic place to learn and study the Profession of Nursing. Our curriculum is learner-centered meaning that classes are interactive, focused on learning, and citical thinking a skill essential to nursing care.

The SIUE School of Nursing is fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), the gold standard for baccalaureate and graduate degree nursing programs. The Certified Nurse Anesthesia Program is also fully accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Programs.

When students are admitted to the SON they are assigned an academic advisor and a nursing faculty mentor. The advisors assist the students navigate the university course registration process or make adjustments to their programs of study as needed. The faculty mentors are the guides assisting the students inculcate the traits that become the foundation for the art and science of nursing. This is further evidence that the SIUE Nursing School is dedicated to assuring that students are successful!

Currently the SON has 61 full and 14 part time faculty teaching our students. Approximately, 85% of our faculty have the doctoral degree and another 10% are enrolled in doctoral programs. We have faculty with national and international reputations for their scholarship. It is wonderful that our students have as their teachers a number of faculty who are the authors of the very textbooks they and nursing students across the nation use.

The School of Nursing functions under a shared governance model.  The governance body is made up of the faculty membership in the Faculty Council chaired by an elected faculty member and through the work of the standing committees, task forces and ad hoc committees of the School.  Students are also organized in a shared governance model with elected officers for each grade level.  The student leadership meets monthly with the Associate Dean for Academic Programs and the Assistant Dean for Undergraduate and Alternative Programs to identify the needs of the students.

Students have at their disposal a state of the art simulated learning laboratory with the latest in innovation and equipment. This enables the students to practice nursing skills in an environment that allows for mistakes and correction of these, before students begin caring for patients in our clinical settings.

I invite you to navigate the School of Nursing web page to learn more about the curriculum, graduate offerings, clinical sites, and our faculty. If you are thinking about nursing as a profession, I can assure you that you will find none more rewarding. Nurses have many opportunities in health care. Nurses are anesthetists, nurse practitioners, forensic nurses, school of nursing faculty and hospital administrators to highlight but a few of the roles a nurse can assume.
