PROJECTS
Project 1: CMIS 468
– Wireless Site Survey
![]() Project
Focus:
To determine the strong and weak points of
the network in Founders Hall. Contribution
/ Role:
Walked around Founders Hall to perform the
site survey Technology
/ Skills:
Xirrus Site Survey Utility, Wireless
Networking, Business Writing Description:
I had to walk around Founders Hall holding my
laptop and scanned the building using Xirrus. It
analyzes the Wi-Fi showing the strength of the
signal of various access points and even displaying
dead spots. Challenges:
It was a challenge trying to install the
software. I
was running into errors but after a system update
and restarting the computer I was able to install
the program. It
was also a challenge on figuring out how to use the
software. This
caused my first couple of scans to be done
incorrectly so I walked every floor about three
times until I got accurate data. Reflections:
This project gave me an insight on how the
network was set up in the building. It also
taught me that access points should be set up within
30 meters of each other to give the best signal. Project 2: CMIS 342
– MIS Case #2
![]()
Contribution
/ Role:
I created several worksheets on excel that
displayed the costs associated with Piedmont’s new
custom order tracking system. Technology
/ Skills:
Microsoft Excel Description: I
was given an excel template of each worksheet. I entered
the given data and used formulas to estimate the
future values for later years. I
calculated one-time costs, recurring costs,
recurring benefits, and breakeven analysis. I used
that data to create the economic feasibility
summary. Challenges: The
challenging part of this project was inputting the
formulas into excel correctly so it would work
correctly with the corresponding cells. If it was
done correctly you can manipulate cells to see how
it affects the rest of the data. With
formulas entered correctly, it was easy to determine
costs such as the estimated breakeven point. Reflections: This
project, as well as the other case studies in CMIS
342, really expanded my knowledge with Microsoft
Excel. Prior
to this class my previous experience with Excel was
very minimal. I
have realized that Microsoft Excel is a very
powerful tool and can be used for various purposes. Project 3: CMIS 342
– SAP
![]()
Contribution / Role: Business
Analyst Technology / Skills: SAP Description: SAP
can be used to manage financial transactions and
monitor materials.
We input the amount of raw materials needed
to create the product of the company and could
manipulate those numbers to see how raw materials
affected inventories. Challenges: There
wasn’t
much challenge for me in this project. With the
help of the SAP manual, I could follow the
directions precisely.
However, when working in SAP I had to make
sure I kept working or it would time out on me. This would
cause me to start all over and spend double the time
on the project. Reflections: Before
CMIS
342, I didn’t even know what SAP was. I have
learned that SAP is a very productive tool and I
actually enjoyed using it. Project
4: CMIS
468 – NFC in Airports
![]()
Contribution / Role: I
researched information on Near Field Communication
technology, helped come up with ideas on an actual
business problem and how NFC could solve that problem. Technology / Skills: Microsoft
Word, Internet Explorer, Team Work Description: The
guidelines for this group assignment was simple, come
up with a real world problem that a business might
have to face and figure out how technology could
resolve that issue.
The 4 members of the team had to research and
put our ideas together on how we wanted NFC to resolve
a problem that an airport could face. We split the
research and typed up our own parts and combined them
into a final product. Challenges: It was
a challenge to figure out our topic at first. We had to
run several ideas with Dr. Jacks that we could
actually prove with numbers that it could resolve an
issue for a business.
After finally figuring out our topic, it took
us a while to research the data and prove with numbers
on how NFC could speed up the process customers board
a plane at an airport leading to more profit. Reflections: Even
though this project was something we made up, it was
definitely not an easy task to actually come up with
raw data and prove a successful outcome. Project 5: CMIS 270 –
Request for Hauling Services
![]()
Contribution / Role: Create
the request for service form Technology / Skills: Microsoft
Word Description: Any
business that provides services to customers’ needs a
form that describes what kind of services they need. This form
for this hauling service provides customer
information, date the service is required, what type
of hauling service they are requesting, and where it
is going. Challenges: The
hardest part of this project was to figure out how I
wanted for format this form. I ended up
researching other business forms to get ideas and I
came up with a similar, easy to read form, that
customers can fill out with no problems. |
