Did you know, the Great Barrier Reef is made up of 900 islands and more than 3,000 reefs? |
The Great Barrier Reef has more than 3,000 coral reefs, around 950 islands and cays, and stretches 2,300 km along the Queensland coastline in Australia. Most of the reefs are found in clear shallow water. The reefs have many different species, such as fish coral, birds, turtles, and also mammals, which all live amongst each other. In addition, mollusks, sponges, worms, crustaceans, and echinoderms also are prominent in this area. CONSERVATION- The reefs are declining due to human actions. Most people believe that the reefs are well protected. Scientists have studied the reefs and discovered over-fishing, land-based pollution, and coral bleaching due to global warming have negatively impacted the reefs natural beauty. This website gives you an opportunity to appreciate the Great Barrier Reef and the species within it. ACTIVITIES- Great Barrier Reef Thinkquest This thinkquest allows teachers to teach about the Great Barrier Reef. In addition, it allows students to more fully understand the importance of the Great Barrier Reef. This page was last updated on April 8, 2009. Questions or comments contact Allison Gaubatz.
