- Great Barrier Reef Marine Park- Administrators
from the park are known as Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA).
Their job is to protect the damaged areas as well as prevent more damaged
areas of the Great Barrier Reef. Fishing is regulated and specific routes
for shipping are mandatory to preserve the reef.
- World Heritage Site- The Great Barrier Reef
has been known as a World Heritage Site since 1981. The reef has many
diverse species which need to be protected. With this great diversity come
much responsibility.
- WWF- A new zoning plan has been developed
and implemented by the Australian government, which bans commercial and
recreational fishing boats from huge sections of the Reef's Marine Park.
This will bring the protected areas of the reef to 42,000 square miles. This
will help the reef to overcome large threats such as overfishing, pollution,
and coral bleaching. Coral bleaching is caused by rising temperatures and
the coral dies and loses its color.
Conservation is very important due to the
decreasing coral reefs in the world today. If we do not make such efforts to
protect the reefs, they could disappear by the year 2030.
