Dwarf minke whales and other marine mammals live in the Great Barrier Reef. Dwarf minke whales visit the Reef every year in June and July. They are baleen whales, which means they feed by straining tiny plankton and krill through comb-like plates on their upper jaws.

 

More than one thousand species of marine fish live in the Great Barrier Reef. They include yellow-fish angelfis fusiliers, blue tuskfish, cardinal fish, turvallies, gobies, mandarin fish, manta rays, and tiger sharks.

 

 

 

 A wide variety of sponges and echinoderms (starfish and sea urchins) live in the Great Barrier Reef.

Many marine reptiles such as the green sea turtle, loggerhead turtles, olive sea snakes, turtle headed snakes, and salt water crocodile live in the Great Barrier Reef.
