Did you know University Housing will pay for you professor’s meal? Our goal is for you to connect with professors beyond the classroom. Getting to know your teachers can benefit you in several ways, including
- Deeper understanding of course material
- Recommendation letters for jobs and graduate school
- Opportunities for employment now and in the future
To participate in this option, simply schedule a date and time with your faculty member. Email Vicky Dean at vdean@siue.edu with your date/time and professor’s name (at least 2 business days in advance). Vicky will provide a card for you to pick up! Need to cancel your Housing contract? You must meet one of the eight approved reasons!
The Single Student Housing Contract covers the nine month academic year, August 2017 - May 2018.
Canceling housing during the contract period (which includes the end of the fall semester) is limited to the following eight reasons: withdrawal, graduation, academic suspension, marriage, serious illness, military induction, counseling considerations, and death in the immediate family.
Residents wishing to cancel their housing contract must cancel in writing and follow the cancellation procedures described in the Single Student Housing Terms and Conditions. Visit www.siue.edu/housing/cancellationrequest for more information.
All requests must be made by the December 1 deadline. After the December 1 deadline and before the beginning of the spring semester check-in, the resident pays the entire fall semester cost, in addition to a $300 contract cancellation fee.
Those requesting cancellation due to graduation will not be required to pay a fee if their cancellation request is received on or before December 1st.

Facilities Issue? Put in a workorder!
University Housing Facilities Management (UHFM) is the unit assigned to the development and maintenance of University Housing facilities and grounds. UHFM is responsible for repairing housing units, care of the grounds surrounding housing facilities, performs snow removal, maintains the cleanliness of common areas and offices in University Housing buildings, oversees pest control and much more.
In the event of any building or grounds related issues, Students need to initiate the repair by submitting a Maintenance Request to University Housing Facilities Management (UHFM). UHFM responds to student initiated repair requests as a first priority. To complete a work order, click HERE!!!
Get protected! Insure yourself and your belongings!
University Housing does not insure the personal property of residents. Residents are strongly encouraged to insure their personal belongings while living in University Housing. Students can look into renter’s insurance or their parent/guardian homeowners’ policy for potential coverage options.
SIUE is Smoke Free, Tobacco Free, Nicotine Free
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville has implemented the Illinois law that prohibits smoking and all tobacco related products into its policies and procedures.
“The Smoke Free Campus Act means that there can be no smoking or tobacco products of any kind on any State-owned University property,” said Vice Chancellor for Administration Kenneth Neher.

Bicycle & Skateboard Rules, Regulations and Etiquette Guidelines
With a campus as large and diverse as SIUE, the safe, courteous and efficient flow of bicycle, skateboard and pedestrian traffic on campus can often times be a fairly complex activity. The following tips that can help keep bicyclists, skateboarders and pedestrians safe while moving about the campus.
Bicycle & Skateboard Regulations and Guidelines
- Pedestrians have the right-of-way. When a bicyclist or skateboarder is passing a pedestrian from behind, they should:
- Give an audible sound to announce their approach; and
- Approach and pass to the left of the pedestrian.
- Bicyclists and skateboarders must obey all stop lines, stop signs, University regulations and applicable state traffic laws.
- Bicycles and skateboards may be used on University sidewalks and bicycle pathways where bicycle traffic is allowed.
- Bicycles and skateboards should be walked across all crosswalks.
- Bicycles and skateboards should not be ridden closer than 3 feet from parked vehicles to allow for the opening of vehicle doors.
- Bicyclists and skateboarders must obey all “Walk Bike” zones, which include
- The Bluff, Evergreen, Prairie, and Woodland Hall sidewalks to the core campus; and
- All crosswalks on University property.
Additional Skateboard Regulations
- Skateboard use is prohibited at the following locations:
- On streets and parking lots;
- In all University buildings, their entrances, and ramps leading to them;
- On any structure including steps, stairs, benches, curbs, ramps and loading docks;
- On tennis courts or basketball courts;
- In the Gardens at SIUE;
- On Stadium track, parking lot, and adjacent grounds;
- In areas where bicycle use is prohibited; and
- On sidewalks and pathways during heavy pedestrian traffic periods.
Everyone should strive to be observant to their surroundings and alert for other pedestrian, bicycle or skateboard traffic in their immediate vicinity. If we all practice common courtesy and watch out for other pedestrian, bicycle and skateboard traffic, everyone can enjoy safer and more pleasant movement around our campus.

What is Safe Zone?
Safe Zone is a community of people who:
- Will be understanding, supportive, and trustworthy if LGBTQIA people need help, advice, or just someone to talk to.
- Will not tolerate homophobic, heterosexist, cisgenderism comments and actions but will address them in an educational and informative manner.
- Have attended Safe Zone training and have information on campus and community resources.
Mission and Goals of Safe Zone:
Safe Zone's mission at SIUE is to develop a campus community of allies and provide support to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, and ally (LGBTQIA) students, faculty, and staff with the ultimate goal of developing SIUE as a safe and welcoming place for LGBTQIA people.

There are various organizations across the nation coming together providing DACA renewal scholarships for those who qualify. Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals – Student Resource Guide
Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals or DACA is a program established by former President Obama in June 2012. Under DACA, the Department of Homeland Security defers taking action to remove qualifying undocumented immigrants, commonly known as DREAMers, and also grants renewable term-limited work authorization. DACA status is subject to renewal every two years. On September 5, 2017, the Trump administration announced that it would begin a phased termination of DACA. The Department of Homeland Security will provide a limited, six-month window during which it will consider certain requests for DACA and applications for work authorization, under specific parameters.

The MICA Project utilizes a combination of community outreach and legal services to promote the voice and dignity of immigrant communities. MICA addresses the surplus need for immigration legal services in immigrant communities by taking a proactive approach, providing immigrants with the information and resources they need before legal issues arise.

The St. Louis Inter-Faith Committee on Latin America (IFCLA) is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization incorporated in the State of Missouri that is committed to standing in solidarity with the poor of Latin America. Since 1982, IFCLA has collaborated with congregations, schools, and organizations in the metropolitan area and across the US to work for a more just and equitable world community. We work to accompany the people of Latin America in their struggles for human rights and social justice through education and advocacy in the US.

The mission of Casa de Salud is to facilitate and deliver high quality clinical and mental health services for uninsured and underinsured patients, focusing on new immigrants and refugees who encounter barriers to accessing other sources of care. Casa’s main services are primary care for illness and injury, mental health counseling, case management, care coordination, and home health visits. Casa also has on-site partners offering legal services, pediatric dental, optometry, and WIC (Women, Infants, and Children, done in collaboration with People’s Health Centers.

Deer vs Motor Vehicle Encounters
It is that time of year again when deer are much more active and on the move due to their mating season. In the past two weeks, there have been 6 traffic crashes involving deer on campus. On average, the SIUE Police Department responds to 20 deer related traffic crashes per year with 75% of them occurring during the 5 months of October through February. Further, 60% of those crashes occurred during the 5 hour time span of 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm. The following information can help prevent or at least minimize the severity of deer related traffic crashes.
- Stay alert. Deer are most active at dawn, dusk and during the evening hours throughout the Fall mating season. Be especially alert for deer between 5:00 pm and 10:00 pm.
- Use your high beams when it is legally permissible. This will increase your field of vision and provide more time for you to react if you see a deer.
- Illinois law requires a driver to dim their headlights 500 feet from an approaching vehicle (opposite direction) and 300 feet when approaching a vehicle from behind (same direction).
- If you see a deer near the roadway, slow down and be very aware to the movements of that deer as well as to the possibility of additional deer in the area.
- Be very cautious about deer standing near the roadway. Due to their quickness, agility and unpredictability, deer can quickly dart out in front of your vehicle without warning.
- Deer frequently travel in herds but tend to cross the road one at a time. So, if a deer runs across the road ahead of you, be alert for other deer in the immediate vicinity, slow down and be prepared to stop.
- Don’t rely on deer whistles or other gimmicks to scare deer away from your vehicle.
- Brake, don’t swerve. Swerving to avoid an animal can put you at risk for hitting another vehicle or losing control of your own car. It can also confuse the deer as to which way to go. Instead, just slow down as quickly and safely as you can. Your odds of surviving an accident are better when hitting a deer rather than hitting another car.
- Wear you seat belt. In case of a deer related crash, wearing your seat belt can help reduce the risk of serious injury.

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) now offers the Rave Guardian app for its students and their families. Rave Guardian is one of the best ways to not only improve personal safety, but also protect your friends by building a private safety network. This app provides instant communication with friends, family, campus safety, and even 911.
SIUE encourages all students throughout campus to utilize the app to network with friends and help increase overall safety and security of the entire student body. An important part of the Guardian app is that students can use it not only to keep themselves safe, but to help protect others. Even students who may not feel as if they need others to help keep them safe can utilize the app to be a guardian and help protect their friends.
