"The United Nations Post-2015 Development Agenda and Leadership" is presented by Ronald Glossop, PhD, professor emeritus in philosophy and peace studies. Take a look back at the United Nations’ millennium development goals and successes over the last 15 years that include eradicating hunger, poverty and discrimination to ensure justice for all. Take a look forward to a new secretary general, new U.S. president, and a new series of goals and benchmarks to be set and reached by 2030.

"The 18th Century Enlightenment and Its Significance" is also presented by Glossop. This period known as the “Age of Reason” resulted in the American and French Revolutions. This time was filled with philosophical thinkers. The idea of human progress, opposition to religious and political authority, and the struggle for education and human rights will be noted, along with the reaction to this liberalism.

Hear Dr. Bryan Jack's Presentation on the Condition of African-Americans Today

The SIUE Black Studies Program is presenting a seminar by Bryan Jack, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Historical Studies.

"The Keep the Colored Man in Low Condition: African-Americans in the Post-Reconstruction South"

Jack's teaching and research areas are African-American history, St. Louis history and the American South. He has developed numerous undergraduate classes, including "Migration and Movement in African American History," "American Slavery Through Biography," "The South in American Culture" and "Civil Rights in St. Louis."

Jack's publications include The Saint Louis African American Community and the Exodusters, both published in 2008 by University of Missouri Press.  

Today is the Nomination Deadline for Employee Recognition Program

The Employee Recognition Program Award is an esteemed accolade bestowed on an employee who epitomizes the University’s core values in his/her daily work. The employee is engaged in accomplishing the mission of the University and routinely exceeds the call of duty. Do you work alongside someone who has a strong commitment toward achieving excellence in their work? 

Why not nominate them for the Employee Recognition Program award? The program is designed to recognize civil service and professional staff employees for their exceptional accomplishments and service to our community. Employees may be nominated for this prestigious award by faculty, staff or students. The nomination must be made or supported by the immediate supervisor.

Nominations are due in the Office of Human Resources by close of business today to be eligible for the April award.

Check Out Today's 39th Annual Art Auction

The Friends of Art along with the SIUE Department of Art and Design will hold its 39th annual Art Auction:

6 p.m. doors open
7 p.m. bidding begins

The 2016 auction will offer original artworks donated by faculty, visiting artists, alumni, friends and advanced students. Additional work will be available to the highest bidder in a silent auction.

To view images of the artwork to be auctioned, visit Friends of Art SIUE on Facebook or attend a preview in the gallery from noon-4 p.m. today.

Tickets are $7 for the general public at the door. Admission is free to all students and those who have donated works for the auction, as well as members of Friends of Art.

Free food and a cash bar will be provided. Free parking will be provided in Lot B (SIUE’s visitor’s lot).

Continuous Improvement Conference: General Education Course Redesign for Success

SIUE has successfully remained afloat, even growing, despite the Illinois state funding crisis. However, continued challenges threaten our mission of “a student-centered educational community dedicated to communicating, expanding and integrating knowledge.”

Join together with staff, faculty and administrators to see where we are on the map, and how we can navigate the crisis together. Instructors will share course redesign efforts they have already undertaken.

We will discuss an institutional plan for undertaking course redesign projects. Participants will discuss course redesign and how we might work together to improve student success. More details to follow.

The conference is designed for administrators, faculty (tenured, tenure track, instructors and lecturers) and staff.

It is co-sponsored by the Faculty Development Council and the Office of the Provost.

Spring Ally Training Session, Register by March 31

Safe Zone, as part of the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion, invites faculty, staff and students to participate in Spring Ally training.

Registration for the sessions is now available and must be completed by Thursday, March 31.

Ally Training is offered on two different dates:

1-3:30 p.m.
Friday, April 8

A location will be determined closer to the trainings and communicated with those who registered.

Safe Zone Ally training aims to develop listening and helping skills, create inclusive habits in the classroom, office and on larger scales and promote understanding with respect to the LGBT community.

Training additionally provides information regarding sexual orientation and gender identity terms, the complexity of sexuality and campus and community resources.

SIUE Relay for Life Carnival for a Cure, April 8

Precision PR and Colleges Against Cancer are planning the SIUE Relay for Life Carnival for a Cure:

The event is for the American Cancer Society and fundraising goal is $24,000.

The carnival will  feature a disc jockey, zumba and other activities for teams to compete in.

Staff Senate Elections, April 13

The University Staff Senate represents civil service and professional staff of SIUE. Employees who are represented by labor organizations, as well as employees who are not represented, can participate on the University Staff Senate, its panels or committees.

The University Staff Senate manages two scholarship funds: The University Staff Senate Scholarship and the Faculty for Collective Bargaining Scholarship Fund. Civil service and professional staff employees participate in the governance of the University via the senate and its panels.

All senate and panel members are elected officers. Elections will be held on Wednesday, April 13.

University Staff Senate Members – terms beginning Thursday, Sept. 1
• Four (4) members from the negotiated and prevailing (which will have three year terms expiring in 2019).o
• Two (2) members from the Open range classification (which will have three year terms expiring in 2019)
o Two (2) members from the administrative staff classification, one non-represented and one represented (which will have three year terms expiring in 2019)

University Staff Senate Panel Members – terms beginning Thursday, Sept. 1
• Four (4) members from negotiated and prevailing classification (which will have two year terms expiring in 2018)
• Four (4) members from the civil service open range classification ( one which will fill a term expiring in 2017 and three which will have two year terms expiring in 2018)
• Six (6) members from the administrative staff classification; four represented and two non-represented (which will have two year terms expiring in 2018)

School of Dental Medicine, Alton IL – term beginning Thursday, Sept. 1
• One (1) representative from any of the following constituencies: open range civil service, negotiated and prevailing civil service or administrative/professional staff from the School of Dental Medicine, Alton (which will have a three year term expiring in 2019)
• Members will be elected by all non-academic employees from their own constituency groups. Positions on the ballot will be in the same order of date and time as receipt of their acceptable petition.

Application for Candidacy
• Petition and statement of candidacy forms are available from the University Governance Office until 4:30 p.m. on March 23 or online at staff/elections.

Eligibility for Candidacy
• Candidates for membership to the Staff Senate must be a permanent, full-time civil service employee or a full-time administrative staff employee on a continuing contract, with a minimum of two years of consecutive employment with the University at the time the candidate picks up the petition and the statement of candidacy forms, and employed on the date of election. Petitions must be filed in person in the University Governance Office.

ELECTION CALENDAR:
March 23 - Latest date for withdrawal of candidates. statements of withdrawal must be made in person in the University Governance Office; Latest date for filing petition and statement of candidacy form

April 6 - Latest date that all non-academic employees will be notified of the official list of candidates and their qualifications
