Assistantships are awarded on a competitive
basis. Candidates should demonstrate a strong
work ethic, adherence to professional standards
and values and be an effective communicator
that possesses good interpersonal skills. The
candidate should have significant knowledge
and experience in recreation management. A
bachelor’s degree is preferred in recreation,
exercise science, communications, management
or other related field. Prior collegiate or
community recreation experience is preferred.
Fitness Operations Graduate Assistant Brief Job
Description:
The Graduate Assistant (Fitness Operations)
is responsible for providing assistance in
the coordination, guidance, supervision, and
direction of informal fitness operations
and personnel. This includes developing
staff schedules, hiring, training, supervising,
evaluating about 20 fitness attendants and
maintaining and troubleshooting equipment in
the main facility and six satellite facilities.
Equipment includes cardiovascular, selectorized
strength, plate loaded, free weights, racks and
platforms. This position has been intentionally
designed to have an emphasis on teamwork and
flexibility as our department seeks to remain well
poised to serve our participants through evolving
conditions.
This position will also serve on a team that
oversees and supports the activities housed
within the dedicated recreational space of the
Student Fitness Center and the shared recreation
space in the Vadalabene Center and other
auxiliary facilities (200,000 total sq. ft.). These
facilities include a total of six basketball courts,
a 25-yard pool, two climbing areas, two group
fitness rooms, a cycling room, a multi-sport court,
two informal fitness/strength areas, a dedicated
weight room, indoor jogging track, racquetball
courts, multipurpose areas, and two member
service stations all of which typically operate
seven days a week. A combined workload of
an average of 20 hours per week is expected;
some early morning, evening, and weekend work
is required.
Contract renewal is anticipated each semester
and available through the duration of the
academic degree program.
