Financial Support for Graduate School
Graduate assistantship appointments provide financial support to graduate students who engage in teaching, research and/or general work. Graduate assistantships include a tuition waiver and a monthly stipend. The tuition waiver does not cover fees (Need help calculating your fees? Check out the Tuition and Fees Estimator). In addition to the job postings listed on this site, students should contact their department or graduate program to find out if other appointments are available.
Assistantship Descriptions
Teaching Assistant
A teaching assistantship (TA) is an appointment in which a graduate student’s primary duty is teaching or serving as a teaching assistant. The TA may assist faculty in teaching undergraduate courses and labs; grading examinations, problem sets or lab assignments; setting up displays for lectures and labs; or preparing or maintaining laboratory equipment. TAs are available to qualified graduate students in academic departments.
Research Assistant
A research assistantship (RA) is an appointment in which a graduate student is engaged in research under a faculty member’s supervision. The faculty member is generally a principal investigator on a grant or contract. RAs are available in many departments and special programs.
General Assistant
A general assistant (GA) renders general service to an academic or administrative unit. This could include a wide variety of tasks that may or may not relate to the student’s graduate program. GA’s tuition waivers are taxed once they exceed the amount of $5,250.
GA Handbook
The GA Handbook contains detailed information about all graduate assistantships, including eligibility requirements, benefits, stipend amounts and more. It is a vital resource for all graduate assistants.
