Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville
All research, research training, experimentation, biological testing, and related activities that involve live, vertebrate animals conducted at SIUE, must be reviewed and approved by the SIUE Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). The Research Administrator for Ethical Compliance organizes the activities of the SIUE Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and performs preliminary reviews of all Applications for Review of Projects Involving the Care and Use of Animals in Research or Instruction.
- The IACUC is composed of a nine member committee made up of faculty and staff from various disciplines including a non-affiliated member from the local community, a Veterinarian, and a non-voting member who serves as the facilities manager.
- IACUC members are appointed by the Associate Provost for Research and Graduate Dean who also serves and the IACUC Institutional Official.
- The IACUC meets bi-monthly on a regular basis, or as needed. Mandatory Semi-Annual Inspections and Program Meetings are conducted in or around April and October of each year. Inspections are done at all locations where animal are housed including the SIUE School of Dental Medicine in Alton and the School of Pharmacy building, the Vadalabene Center and the Science Building West on the main campus in Edwardsville. Program meetings are conducted following the inspections either on the same day or on a day soon after the inspections.
- Animal Care protocols are submitted by faculty, staff, and students to the Research Administrator for Ethical Compliance. They are date stamped upon arrival and added to the next meeting Agenda.
- Active protocols are kept on file in the Research Administrator for Ethical Compliance office. Protocol files are organized by the name of faculty principle investigator.
- All projects with a duration period of over 12 months will be reviewed annually up until the end of the 3 year approval period. PHS policy requires a re-review of protocols at least every three years, and the requirements are the same as for an initial review.
- The USDA Registration file, the OLAW Annual Report file, and the SIUE Animal Welfare Assurance Document are all located in the Research Administrator for Ethical Compliance office.
- The SIUE Animal Welfare Assurance number is #A3486-01. This document must be renewed every 3 years.
- The OLAW Annual Report is due each year by March 1st.
- The USDA Registration is due each year by December 1st.
- All faculty, staff and students using animals in research must take the on-line certification training provided through the SIUE Graduate School by the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) at the University of Miami.
- Student researchers are asked to submit their Registration of Thesis Title forms to the Research Administrator for Ethical Compliance for processing. The Project Coordinator checks to make sure there is an approved faculty protocol covering the student’s research before signing off on this document. Once signed, the original is sent to the Graduate Admissions Officer in the Office of the Registrar. A copy is made for the IRB file.
