Advanced Microsoft Power BI
Date: March 12, 2027
Time: 8:30am - 4:00pm (6.5 hours)
Instructors: Gina Niebrugge & Debra Lassman - Office Productivity Training (OPT)
Fee: $ 350 (Includes all course materials and parking)
Course Description
Move beyond basic Power BI reporting to solve more complex data and analysis problems. Participants build a stronger data model, create reusable DAX measures, and learn how calculations respond to filters and report interactions. Each calculation is tested in a visualization so participants can verify why a result is correct.
Participants then work with more challenging data from multiple sources, using Power Query to investigate quality problems, repair information needed for relationships, and reshape and combine data for accurate analysis. The emphasis is on choosing the right approach for the business problem and validating the results throughout the process.
Learner Outcomes
At the end of this program, learners will be able to:
• Apply star-schema design principles and evaluate relationship and filter flow
• Create and use a Date table
• Distinguish calculated columns from measures and understand row context versus filter context
• Create measures using functions such as SUM, COUNT, CALCULATE, and DIVIDE
• Use measure branching and VAR/RETURN to create calculations that are easier to understand and test
• Use AI to draft, explain, or troubleshoot DAX and verify the resulting calculations
• Assess unfamiliar data sources and identify problems affecting analysis
• Profile errors, blanks, duplicates, inconsistent values, and incorrect data types
• Use Power Query to reshape, append, and merge information from multiple sources
• Identify and repair mismatched keys, duplicate keys, and differences in the level of detail
• Use AI to suggest transformations, assist with M code, and troubleshoot data-preparation problems
• Create visuals throughout the process to validate calculations and repaired data
• Organize the results into a report that communicates findings clearly to a nontechnical audience
The day concludes with an independent hands-on challenge in which participants prepare and model complex data, create appropriate measures, and build a report that communicates the resulting insights.
Prerequisite: Completion of days 1–3 in this series or equivalent experience building Power BI reports, transforming data with Power Query, and working with related tables.
