Course Description
Day 1 - Power BI Fundamentals: Build, Transform and Validate Your First Report
Turn business data into a clear, interactive Power BI report while learning the workflow behind reliable analysis. Participants begin with prepared data, become comfortable in Power BI Desktop, and build visuals that answer practical business questions. As new reporting needs are introduced, they use Power Query to clean, reshape, and combine additional data before incorporating it into the report.
The emphasis is on understanding why each step is needed rather than learning features in isolation. Participants use visuals throughout the day to verify that transformations and reporting choices accurately represent the underlying data.
Learner Outcomes
At the end of this program, learners will be able to:
• Understand the Power BI reporting process and navigate Power BI Desktop
• Connect to Excel or CSV data and review fields, data types, and basic data quality
• Viewing and understanding automatic relationships
• Translate practical business questions into appropriate visualizations
• Create and format cards, charts, tables, and slicers
• Apply themes and consistent report formatting
• Evaluate source data and identify common quality problems
• Use Power Query column profiling to identify errors, blanks, inconsistent values, and incorrect data types
• Clean and standardize data using common Power Query transformations
• Split, replace, reshape, and unpivot data when needed for analysis
• Append related datasets and understand Applied Steps
• Build visuals throughout the transformation process to validate results
• Use AI to suggest visual choices, explain transformations, assist with M code, or troubleshoot problems, then verify the results
The day concludes with an independent hands-on challenge in which participants prepare data and build a focused Power BI report to answer a new set of business questions.
Day 2 - Microsoft Power BI Fundamentals: Connect Data and Build Interactive Reports
Build more meaningful Power BI reports by connecting information from multiple business sources. Participants learn how related tables work together in Power BI, create a straightforward data model, and build visualizations that demonstrate whether relationships and filters are producing accurate results.
Participants then use the connected data to create an interactive reporting experience with purposeful layouts, slicers, filters, tooltips, and drillthrough. The day concludes by publishing the report to the Power BI Service and exploring how reports and dashboards can be viewed and shared.
Learner Outcomes
At the end of this program, learners will be able to:
• Identify transactional, descriptive, and key fields in business data
• Review, create, and modify relationships in Model view
• Understand one-to-many relationships, cardinality, filter direction, and active relationships at a practical level
• Organize related tables into a straightforward star model
• Build visuals using information from multiple tables
• Test filter flow and recognize duplicates, blanks, or inaccurate results
• Match visual choices to business questions and user needs
• Organize report content from summary to detail using readable, accessible layouts
• Use filters, slicers, and visual interactions intentionally
• Create a focused tooltip or drillthrough experience
• Use AI to review a data model, explain unexpected results, or critique report design, then verify the results
• Publish a report to the Power BI Service
• Distinguish reports, live report pages, and dashboards
• Review basic viewing and sharing considerations
The day concludes with an independent hands-on challenge in which participants connect related data and create an interactive report that answers a new set of business questions.
Prerequisite: Completion of Day 1 of this series on "Preparing Data for Power BI with Excel and Power Query" or equivalent experience working with Excel tables and preparing data for analysis.
