Accessible Wayfinding
NaviLens is being adopted on campus as a high-density, smart-marker system to aid students who are blind or have low vision with independent, audio-guided, indoor/outdoor, and long distance navigation via smartphone app. By using high-contrast, colored, QR-style codes that don't need to be focused allow for quick 160 degree angle scanning. Codes are placed on walls, in hallways, or on signage to provide audio cues, directions and in some cases, real-time information.
Download NaviLens
How it Works
- Open the app and scan your surroundings with your phone.
- The app will pick up any QR codes in the area, including:
- Up to 40 feet away
- While you're moving
- At an angle
- In low lighting
- When the app detects a QR code, it announces and displays the information in the code and how far away it is, updating as you move toward it. The information will be in the language of your phone.
Who Should Use It?
Anyone can use it. It was developed especially for people who are:
- Blind or visually impaired
- Deaf or hard of hearing who have difficulty asking a hearing person for directions
- Not native English speakers whose phone is in their preferred language
- Not familiar with a building
NaviLens Implementation
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville is proud to implement this innovative technology to increase the overall accessibility of our campus. Campus adoption will take place over set phases until completion.
Phase One
For the first phase we have selected the buildings with significant traffic from campus visitors as well as faculty, staff and students whom may have visual impairments. In the coming days we will begin implementing codes to label staff offices (i.e. ACCESS), restroom facilities and amenities, expanding into the Morris University Center, Student Success Center and University Dining. We will continue to update this page as additional spaces and buildings incorporate NaviLens codes.
