Alestle Wins Eight Illinois College Media Awards

The Alestle took home eight awards at the annual Illinois College Press Association Conference (ICPA). The student-driven publication earned two first place awards, placed in five other categories and earned one honorable mention in the competition with 35 Illinois colleges and universities.

Former Alestle Photo Editor Brian Munoz was awarded first place in the large-school division in spot news photograph category for coverage of protests in the St. Louis metropolitan area. Former photographer Grace Tierney won first place in the feature photograph category.

The Alestle staff also received second place in the large-school news writing category for coverage of a unity march on SIUE’s campus. Editor-in-Chief Caitlin Lally and Munoz won the second place honors in the photo essay competition for their coverage of Bosnian immigrants in the metro area. Lally also brought home an honorable mention for feature page design in the large-school division for her work on “Metro East Eats: Cupcakes.”

Cartoonist Nicole Patton won third place in the open division’s editorial cartooning category. All schools, regardless of size, were able to enter their work in that category. Photographer Lashai Spencer took third place in the large-school sports photography category.

MUC Celebrates 50th Anniversary, Register Now for Decades Dash

The Morris University Center invites students, faculty, staff, alumni and the general public to help celebrate its 50th anniversary by enjoying special offers and participating in a week of engaging events, Monday-Friday, March 20-24.

Events include an indoor scavenger hunt, a 5K Decades Dash, a celebratory birthday party and more:

• Scavenger Hunt: Look for old photos with clues scattered throughout the MUC to earn prizes

Saturday Studio Art Workshops are set for:
Saturdays through April 22
No class March 11 or April 1

Studio instruction is once again being offered for students, grades K-12.

All classes are designed to stimulate creative growth. Emphasis is placed on developing skills in a variety of media and in generating ideas for creative expression.

Art teachers in Saturday Studio classes are becoming certified art specialists and are art majors in the Department of Art and Design.

All sessions will be held in the Art and Design West building on SIUE’s campus.

Segue Celebrates Sullivan: Filmmaker Captures History of Renowned Architect

SIUE recently hosted, “Louis Sullivan Architectural Ornaments at SIUE Conference: Bring the Past to Live in the 21st Century” and a film screening of “Louis Sullivan: The Struggle for American Architecture” as part of its Arts & Issues series. Sullivan’s architectural ornament collection, salvaged by photographer Richard Nickel, was sold to SIUE in 1965 and ever since has been known as the largest collection of physical ornaments from the world-renowned designer’s constructions.

On Sunday’s 9 a.m. episode of Segue on WSIE 88.7 FM, SIUE’s premier radio show that outlines the ideas and issues within the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), Greg Budzban, PhD, CAS dean, speaks to documentary filmmaker Mark Richard Smith about the screening of his film, his research about Sullivan and Sullivan’s profound effect on American architecture.

Emeriti Faculty Association Deadline for Proposals, March 6

The Emeriti Faculty Association is pleased to request proposals from SIUE tenure and tenure-track faculty for projects that strengthen the academic quality of programs and that enhance the reputation of the University.

The deadline for proposals is Monday, March 6. Application guidelines are available at siue.edu/emeriti/.

SIUE Staff Senate Election Filing Deadline, March 8

The SIUE Staff Senate will hold its election on Wednesday, April 5.

Petition and Statement of Candidacy forms are available from the University Governance Office until 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 8 or online at siue.edu/ugov/staff/elections_staff_candidacy.shtml.

Eligibility for Candidacy is as follows: candidates for membership to the Staff Senate must be a permanent, full-time civil service employee or a full-time administrative staff employee on a continuing contract, with a minimum of two years of consecutive employment with the University at the time the candidate picks up the petition and the statement of Candidacy forms, and employed on the date of election. Petitions must be filed in person in the University Governance Office.

The following openings are available:

University Staff Senate Members – Term beginning Friday, Sept. 1

Three (3) members from the Negotiated and Prevailing (which will have three-year terms expiring in 2020).
One (1) members from the Open Range Classification (which will have a three-year term expiring in 2020)

Innovative Digital Archive Features History of Madison County, Launch Event March 14

Madison Historical: The Online Encyclopedia and Digital Archive for Madison County, Ill. will be introduced at an upcoming public event.

The innovative digital archive is transforming the historical experience, using 21st century technology to display 20th century history, and inviting the public to be content creators.

Madison County Regional Superintendent of Schools Robert Daiber, EdD, is leading the project. It is being developed and managed by SIUE College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Historical Studies associate professors Jeffrey Manuel, PhD, and Jason Stacy, PhD, Stephen Hansen, PhD, faculty emeritus and former interim chancellor, along with undergraduate and graduate students. 

Madison Historical offers the first formally recorded history of the county since 1912. During the launch event, organizers will demonstrate its interactive nature and expand on the opportunities it presents for professional development. Attendees will have hands-on opportunities to explore the site.

Project goals include digitally highlighting the physical collections to foster public interest in visiting local museums and historical societies. It will also serve as a valuable resource for local teachers and students, who can incorporate local history into their teaching and learning by using materials from the website.

Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society Announces its Awards Season, Application Deadline March 17

The Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society -- SIUE Chapter 203 is announcing the opening of its awards season. Phi Kappa Phi is seeking student applicants for:

  • Undergraduate Scholarship ($1,000)
  • Undergraduate Paper Competition (prizes of $200, $100 and $50)
  • Graduate Fellowship ($1,000 from SIUE PKP Chapter; forwarded to national office for additional fellowships)

If you are a student or know students who should apply, please consider these opportunities.

The application deadline is March 17.

SIUE to Host Student Rural Health Careers Forum, March 25

A Student Rural Health Careers Forum will be held at SIUE:

The Forum will showcase the many career paths available for in-demand professionals with backgrounds in business, healthcare and information technology. It will feature panel discussions with top healthcare administrators, clinicians, graduate students and faculty members.

The SIUE Graduate School, Illinois Rural Health Association (IRHA) and Illinois Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Network are hosting the event. Registration is due by Tuesday, March 21 at ilruralhealth.org.
