The University Staff Senate represents Civil Service and Professional Staff of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Employees who are represented by labor organizations as well as employees who are not represented can participate on the University Staff Senate, its panels or committees. The University Staff Senate manages two scholarship funds: The University Staff Senate Scholarship and the Faculty for Collective Bargaining Scholarship Fund. Civil Service and Professional Staff employees participate in the governance of the University via the senate and its panels. All senate and panel members are elected officers. University Staff Senate SUMMER Scholarship 2017


Beginning MARCH 8, 2017, the University Staff Senate will begin accepting applications for its Summer Scholarship. The deadline for receipt of the entire typed application packet will be 4:30 PM. – MARCH 24, 2017.

The University Staff Senate has established a fund to provide scholarship awards to qualifying SIUe students. To be eligible for consideration for a scholarship award, you must meet the following criteria:

You must be the son, daughter, grandchild, spouse, or civil union partner of a presently employed or retired Civil Service (excluding non-status) or Professional Staff employee (excluding appointments of less than 50% and term appointments of less than six months) of SIUe.

You must meet admissions requirements for undergraduate study at SIUe.

The scholarship award will be applied to your university account for the Semester. This award will be reported to the Office of Student Financial Aid to be considered in evaluating your overall financial aid package. Should this amount combined with other awards or payments cause a credit balance on your account, a refund check will be mailed to you from the Bursar's Office.

Through the SIUE scholarship management system, all students can browse and apply for more than 450 scholarships available in the various schools, departments and units at SIUE.  This system also offers information on various external or outside scholarships available as well.

To begin a scholarship application, follow these steps:

1. Login at with your e-ID and Password. You must have already been accepted to SIUE and received your e-ID and password.

2. Fill out the general scholarship application. The system will search for scholarships and awards you may be eligible for.  For some, you will automatically be entered into the applicant pool and others may require you to answer additional questions.  

3. Continue to check the system regularly as new scholarships become available at different times, also be sure to browse our “external” scholarship list that provides information and direct links to outside scholarship websites.  

If you meet the eligibility criteria above, the software will direct you to the Staff Senate Summer Scholarship page.  Please, complete by 4:30 PM – MARCH 24, 2017. You are responsible for contacting the University Governance Office to ensure your application packet is complete.  You will be notified of the decision of the Scholarship Selection Committee. NOTICE OF ELECTION – April 5, 2017

University Staff Senate Members – Terms beginning September 1, 2017

  •  Three (3) members from the Negotiated and Prevailing (which will have three-year terms expiring in 2020).
  •  One (1) members from the Open Range Classification  (which will have a three-year term  expiring in 2020)

East St. Louis Center, East St. Louis, Ill Term beginning September 1, 2017

  •  One (1) representative from any of the following constituencies:  Open Range Civil Service, Negotiated and Prevailing Civil Service, or Administrative/Professional Staff from the East St. Louis Center, East St. Louis (which will have a three-year  term expiring in 2020)

University Staff Senate Panel Members – Terms beginning September 1, 2017

  •  Five (5) members from Negotiated and Prevailing Classification (which will have two-year terms expiring in 2019)
  •  Six (6) members from the Civil Service Open Range Classification (6 of which will have two-year terms expiring in 2019)
  •  Three (3) members from the Administrative Staff Classification; 3 Represented (which will have two-year terms expiring in 2019)

Members will be elected by all non-academic employees from their own constituency groups.  Positions on the ballot will be in the same order of date and time as receipt of their acceptable petition.

Application for Candidacy:  Petition and Statement of Candidacy forms are available from the University Governance Office until 4:30 p.m. on March 8, 2017 or online at

Eligibility for Candidacy:  Candidates for membership to the Staff Senate must be a permanent, full-time Civil Service employee or a full-time Administrative Staff employee on a continuing contract, with a minimum of two years of consecutive employment with the University at the time the candidate picks up the petition and the statement of Candidacy forms, and employed on the date of election.  Petitions must be filed in person in the University Governance Office.



March 8, 2017 – Latest date for withdrawal of candidates.  Statements of Withdrawal must be made in person in the University Governance Office

March 8, 2017 – Latest date for filing petition and Statement of Candidacy form

March 29, 2017 – Latest date that all non-academic employees will be notified of the official list of candidates and their qualifications

APRIL 5, 2017– Date of election

Eligibility to Vote:  Any Civil Service employee (excluding temporary, provisional, and extra help), who is currently employed as of the date of election, shall be entitled to vote.  Any Administrative/Professional Staff Employee currently employed as of the date of the election shall be entitled to vote.

*NOTE* If the number of Petitions for Candidacy taken out is equal to or less than the number of vacancies, petitioners will be elected by acclamation and no ballots will be circulated to the full constituency.   All Petitioners of Candidacy will be notified by the Governance Secretary to attend the August 3, 2017 University Staff Senate meeting, at which time the election results will be announced.

University Staff Senate 2014 Fall Scholarship

Congratulations! Two students have each been awarded a $1000 Fall Scholarship.  Nicholas Caban, son of Jan (Facilities) and Susan (Registrar) Caban, AND Jack Desse, grandson of

retiree Gary Smith (School of Dental Medicine) have been selected for a Staff Senate Scholarship this fall. An award presentation will take place at the October 2 Staff Senate meeting in the

Willow Room, Morris University Center. Thanks goes to the Scholarship Selection Committee for their service to this worthy task.

Staff Senate Summer 2014 Scholarship 


The Staff Senate awarded a $500.00 Summer 2014 Staff Senate Scholarship to Gabrielle Geiger, daughter of Paula Geiger (Bursar) in the Chancellor's Office, Friday, May 2, 2014. Congratulations, Gabrielle!!
