Finding Childcare

Searching for good childcare while working full time can be daunting. The Quality Checklist and Links of Interest provide many resources to help you find a licensed or accredited childcare provider. Whether you are looking for an in-home nanny or an early childhood center, there are many options to consider, so take time to assess those options. The health, safety and the developmental needs of your child are important factors that will influence your final decision.

Finding an In-Home Provider

Quality childcare has been shown to benefit children through improving social skills and behavior.
(Associated Early Care & Education, 2011)

Finding the right in-home care provider such as a babysitter or nanny should not be rushed. The childcare resources on our website provide information about local babysitters in your area. Be sure to examine the prospective babysitter's background, experience, and any licenses or accreditations they possess. It is important to conduct a thorough interview with potential caregivers before leaving your child in their custody.

For help finding a provider not listed, contact the Department of Human Services (DHS) Children’s Home and Aid Office.  For Madison and Sr. Clair counties the phone number is 800-467-9200, and the extension for a parent referral counselor is x390.  The DHS Office is located at 1925 Madison Avenue, Granite City, IL 62040.

Licensed Childcare

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) governs the activities of licensed childcare providers. The regulations and guidelines set by the state outline health and safety standards that daycare providers must meet to promote a child's well-being. The list of local licensed childcare providers is not all encompassing, and your own research is encouraged. Consider completing your own background checks on caregivers to assure your child is in a safe and nurturing environment.
