Movie Minds

The Oscar Review of the Day:

The Oscar review of the day goes to one of my favorite movies ever, Pulp Fiction (as shown on the side). This epic, crime movie from the creative mind of Quentin Tarentino tells not one, but three different stories that revolve around drugs, violence, and criminals.

Since its release, it has been known as being one of the greatest postmodern films. It was nominated for seven Academy Awards, but more importantly, it was chosen to receive the Palm d'Or at the annual Cannes Film Festival, which is awarded to the greatest movie in the world for that year.

What makes this movie so great is its dialogue, throughout the entire film. Before this, films used dialogue to simply move the story forward; however, Tarentino used simple dialogue that seemed more realistic. The dialogue was more realistic and used much more cultural references than any other dialogue in films at that time. This influenced many other writers and directors to use that same style to films after this.

Overall...

If you have not seen this movie then you better stop reading this, go to netflix, redbox, or whatever the heck rents out movies anymore and get it. If you don't have money, then get a job and rent it next week. If you can't find a job then tell your mom to give you money to rent or buy it. If your mom won't do it then ask dad. If your dad won't then throw something hard into a glass object and cause a distraction and take the money while they are not looking. And if that doesn't work...steal it. MUST-SEE!

The Raspberry Review of the Day:

The Raspberry review of the day goes to the headache-giving, action-packed thriller Armageddon. This crazy film is one of the many overly, action-packed films by director Michael Bay. The story tells of a team ordinary, oil drillers asked by NASA to save the world by drilling a nuclear bomb into an asteroid and blowing it up before it attacks Earth (crazy I know).

Despite being a box-office hit and even being nominated for special effects at the Oscars (because it's Michael Bay, the king of using expensive, over-the-top effects to make a lot of money), this film has been seen as being a dud. It was nominated for a whopping seven Golden Raspberrys, and earning Bruce Willis a Worse Actor award...congrats Bruce!

What makes this movie such a headache to watch is the constant problems that occur while the drillers are on the spacecraft and asteroid. However, despite a new problem every five seconds, they somehow overcome every one of them! In addition, the art of direction, the actors, and the story seemed just too much for an audience to handle. Don't get me wrong, people will enjoy this movie the first time they watch it, but it gets annoying after a while.

Overall...

This movie is a good film to watch once or twice, but it gets ridiculous after that. Maybe it's the fact that we've seen this story already in Independence Day and Deep Impact, which all came out around the same time. But seriously, why have this many problems in a movie? It's already over 2 1/2 hours. Why couldn't they cut out some of the problems because everyone knows the real problem that oil drillers could not fulfill this task over a small amount of training time. Why not just tell the real astronauts how to drill? If I was one of these citizens, I'd be like, "we're screwed" from the getgo and not cheer them on like they're heroes before they even have saved anything. But hey, (SPOILER ALERT) they did save the world, in case you were seriously wondering if Michael Bay was seriously going to switch-up another unoriginal movie idea and destroy the world. However, I would say watch it and be your own critic!
